Obama Officials In 2010: 93 Million Americans Will Be Unable To Keep Their Health Plans Under Obamacare

Quote
Section 1251 of the Affordable Care Act contains what’s called a “grandfather” provision that, in theory, allows people to keep their existing plans if they like them. But subsequent regulations from the Obama administration interpreted that provision so narrowly as to prevent most plans from gaining this protection.

“The Departments’ mid-range estimate is that 66 percent of small employer plans and 45 percent of large employer plans will relinquish their grandfather status by the end of 2013,” wrote the administration on page 34,552 of the Register. All in all, more than half of employer-sponsored plans will lose their “grandfather status” and become illegal. According to the Congressional Budget Office, 156 million Americans—more than half the population—was covered by employer-sponsored insurance in 2013.

Another 25 million people, according to the CBO, have “nongroup and other” forms of insurance; that is to say, they participate in the market for individually-purchased insurance. In this market, the administration projected that “40 to 67 percent” of individually-purchased plans would lose their Obamacare-sanctioned “grandfather status” and become illegal, solely due to the fact that there is a high turnover of participants and insurance arrangements in this market. (Plans purchased after March 23, 2010 do not benefit from the “grandfather” clause.) The real turnover rate would be higher, because plans can lose their grandfather status for a number of other reasons.

How many people are exposed to these problems? 60 percent of Americans have private-sector health insurance—precisely the number that Jay Carney dismissed. As to the number of people facing cancellations, 51 percent of the employer-based market plus 53.5 percent of the non-group market (the middle of the administration’s range) amounts to 93 million Americans.

This could probably go in the other thread but because of how big of a bombshell this is it really deserves its own topic.

If this is true, its game over for Democrats and their party.  There is no way they can survive if 93 million Americans are kicked off of their healthcare plans.  There simply isnt.  After years of hearing "if you like your healthcare you can keep it, period" people wont accept this.  The outrage is already high and weve only seen 3 million lose their coverage, 93 million and were talking a totally different ballgame.  As in the "Party may not survive" kind of outrage.

Yeah, they've done something that's going to upset a lot of people. Question is did they do more to help moochers that vote over producers that vote. Time will tell.

Probably not, because by HHS's own estimation, it will only cover about 3 million of those previously uninsured.  And that's their BEST case scenario.

Awful. Couldn't have been more obvious if people paid attention. Quick thought. Perhaps, it was known that this would become obvious to all the voters by the liberals that pushed it. Therefore, it's a springboard for further regulation by using a heightened need to place blame again on the free market system. Spin spin spin. A political stratagem, not a conspiracy.

I'm curious about why Obama really gave the employers the year extension.  I think there is another big shoe to drop next year when the employer provided insurance gets switched out.

Interesting. I haven't the foggiest idea, but obviously if there is something afoot it won't be anything we'll like.

When the employer mandate hits, if their coverage doesn't meet DemocratCare criteria then they will be cancelled.  The employers will either be forced to buy new more expensive plans for their workers or kick them out to the exchanges.

That was part of the plan to pay for DemocratCare in the first place. It's the part that gives people the freedom to be shiftless bums and move from job to job between collecting welfare and unemployment.
