Why is there no low cost /free veterinarian care for strays, or any animals for that matter??

We have emergency departments who are obligated to treat anyone until they're stable, yet there is NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING, that offers the same for our animals??
 
Last night on my way to work, I passed a very injured cat. 2 young women had pulled over and were waving at the motorists to pass on the other lane. One of them was crying and talking to someone on the phone and didn't make much sense. The other young woman was about to lose it too. She said she kept calling Animal Control but no one is answering. They didn't have money to take it to the vet. The cat, a beautiful yellow and white cat, was severely injured, and in agony. It was trying to get up, but kept falling back down

I didn't have much cash with me, but I gave them everything I had. I looked up the nearest vet clinic open 24 hours and had them go there.

I didn't know what happened to the cat. I hope she was at least eased from suffering.

1. Many of us in rescue ask this same question.

Some vets will give discounts to rescue groups that help animals but it is not enough. So many times we see abused animals that need urgent care and we end up paying out of our own pockets and then try to find good homes for them. It is a very depressing thing to watch. These are helpless animals that do not deserve what happens to them but I can tell you that I wish the worst hell on those that commit these crimes.

2. our vet gives us services at 50% reduction when we take strays and feral cats in for shots and fixing...understand that hospitals don't provide "free services" as they do bill medicaid. I do know our local vets do exemplary job in providing low cost services and sometimes free services for strays and ferals. I certainly don't expect them to do it all the time.
 
Local animal control people have no funds at all.

3. There is.

We "rescued" three feral cats (who now live with us). We took two to CT's "vet mobile," a motor home set up as a mobile veterinarian's office which makes scheduled stops at shopping malls and super markets. You drop the cat off in the morning, they'll spay/neuter and give necessary shots, and you pick up k***y in the afternoon. I don't recall the exact cost, but it was about $60. The third k***y went to out country vet, who is actually a large-animal specialist (it's horse country). She spayed and vaccinated k***y for almost nothing. We paid for the meds. She even loaned us a nice padded cat carrier because we brought the cat in in a cardboard box, and she said that was too traumatic for k*****s.
 
There ARE good vets out there, and some state-run programs or volunteer programs like in CT. You just have to look!

One of the twin's cats is named "Castro;" I dunno what he named the other two.

We had a deluge of rats and feral cats when a nearby old housing area was demolished for a shopping center.  

I have no clue how one even goes about catching a feral cat, let alone getting it to a vet.  I let them hang around because of the rat problem, which they were quite efficient at dispatching.

Those where the spookiest cats.  They were all gun metal grey with big gold eyes.  They gave me the creeps just to look at them.
