I think we should have mandatory "training" for rich people

Once every five years or so, they have to live, for a month or so, like the rest of us. Work at McDonald's, pay their bills on a pittance, eat Ramen noodles, take public transportation, etc.

I used to be a single food stamp mother; very poor. Now, I am very comfortable, but I will never forget how tough it is out there; never forget where I came from; and never neglect to stop and help someone in that same situation, now, because I am honored that I CAN.

I bet you that if these rich people had to live like the rest of us for a month or so every few years, they would have a lot more respect for the poor.

Is that so, Melanie? Well, it it so happens that I think we should have mandatory "work" for poor people.

Not the poor people who already work, but the lazy assfaces on the government teat, like 80% of your DU brethren.

For one month, no welfare. Instead, you get out of bed and work. Not at poetry or whatever you think you should be doing, but actual work.

So you'll know what normal people do to make ends meet.

I agree!  Ok, if they have to do that then it goes the other way right?

People on welfare should have to get a job and that could be picking up trash from the side of the road.  They have to learn to live on a budget and only eat what keeps their bodies healthy.  They should also not be allowed any phone, internet, or anything else.  They do really need to learn what it's like to be poor, kwim?

Maybe many of us did already.  Did that ever occur to you?

While not rich, I'm well off.  I've baled hay for $2 an hour.  One summer growing up, I helped a farmer clear some land every Sunday, digging stumps and thistles out of the ground in 90 degree heat.   I've worked in delis, grocery stores, and state parks for minimum wage.

I went to to college thanks to the the GI bill.  In college, one time I ran out of money between paychecks (I worked part time 25-30 hrs a week the entire time I went to college full time) and had no food, so I ate some sugar that was in my cupboard.

Just sugar.

Now, how can that be...?  Am I just luckier, or is there something else that makes the difference between you and I?

Maybe I refused to accept my outward conditions as a reflection of my inner worth.  You can create your own good luck by doing something about your position in life rather than whining about it and watching more Wheel of Fortune, buying lottery tickets, and

precious hours, days and years posting on Democratic Underground.

Think of all you could have accomplished if you just stopped whining and did something about it.... :whatever:

I actually like this idea, can you imagine the 0bama's being poor for a month?

     I'm sure the First Wookie and all of DU have many fancy reasons why the 0bummer family should be exempt, and indeed YOU should be forced to endure their month of poorness.

     What the DUmmies mean, of course, not poorness so much as MISERY, which is failure on their part because many people have to eat ramen, don't drive nice cars, don't sport an
iPhone, but are still quite content. And I am also sure that many DUmmies have those things and are still utterly miserable.

That is true they always exempt themselves from anything bad, they get exempted from 0bamacare, they still live it up even during sequester and government shutdowns. They never suffer the consequences from the damage they inflict on the rest of the country.

I'd just like to see people receiving government assistance have yearly (or more) random drug tests. The people who work for to provide them with their handouts do.

Then I think they should have to work for their money, like everyone else. There are plenty of jobs they could do, including those shovel-ready jobs that never got done. They'd learn a skill and maybe they'd get so hard of doing those jobs for so little money, they'd actually join the rest of sociey. Oh, wait, that would never do...the left would lose an entire voting block.

I'm not rich but this is not a part of my life cycle.

Here's a counter-proposal.

At least once a year you should live like a rich person. You should:

* Show up to work on time

* Work more than 40 hours

* Actually work

* Work at something that actually demands tangible results

* Strive to keep your customers satisfied and your competitors at bay

* Assume responsibility for an entire workforce

* Deal with an army of voracious regulators who know nothing about your profession but will shut you down if they imagine you aren't doing it right

* Provide for your own damn spawn

* Pay taxes

* Stop whining

Dealsies?
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

To all lurking DUmbasses (yes, even you, DUmbass Th1onein)

I grew up on a dairy farm, learned to drive garden tractors by age 6, was driving the big 100 hp diesels by 8 (by myself!)

Dad taught me how to weld, plumb, and run electrical wiring by age 12, at 14, I rebuilt a C-221 International tractor motor, a couple of D-144's (one had a broken crankshaft), and a Perkins gasoline combine motor over the summer, along with the monthly tear downs on the top end of my Suzuki TM-125 motocrosser  (High performance 2-strokes are VERY hard on pistons and rings.  20-30 hours is the norm.)

Graduated High School with honors, got an academic schoolarship to the local Community College, graduated from there cum laude with a Associates Degree in Business Management, and a minor in Farm Operation and Management, always made the Dean's List.

I've worked at least 2 jobs ALL my life, sometimes 3, been married, divorced, married again, raised my 2 kids with my wife's 3, drove a truck for 20 years, been at my current job for 10, have only been OFFICIALLY employed full time (with benefits) for 10 years total, although I've very rarely worked less than 60 hours/week since I was 15.

Never once asked for anything from the government, except TO BE LEFT THE F**K ALONE!!!!

Am I "lucky"?  Hardly.  I just used my time to develop my talents, not chase some DUmbass unrealistic dream.  Dreams are for children, grow the f**k up, and to quote George Thorogood, "Get a haircut, and get a REAL JOB!"

Oh, one more thing.  Maybe one of you DUmmies can "educate" me on this.
How in the hell does raising taxes on the "rich", or making them poor, make MY life any better?
Murphy's 3rd Law:  "You can't make anything 'idiot DUmmie proof'.  The world will just create a better idiot DUmmie."
