Shelves in Walmart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, LA were reportedly cleared Saturday night, when the stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though they were not showing limits.

The chaos that followed ultimately required intervention from local police, and left behind numerous carts filled to overflowing, apparently abandoned when the glitch-spurred shopping frenzy ended.

I think it would qualify as a type of income and if the EBT allotment is not adjusted down then some of the other benefits they get should be adjusted to compensate for the increase in income for this month.

The way those benefits are set up is so decentralized that it'd never happen.  HUD take supplemental rent money that was put on the card by USDA or Dept of Education food programs?  No way.  EBT cards are a money laundromat.

Shelves at Walmart stores in Louisiana were cleared in a shopping frenzy over the weekend after a glitch in the Electronic Benefits Transfer system allowed government food stamp recipients to make purchases without spending limits.

For two hours Saturday night, customers rang up overflowing cartloads of food at stores in Springhill and Mansfield, La., after cashiers allowed them to use their EBT cards anyway despite not showing limits, KSLA-TV reported.

“It was worse than any Black Friday,” Springhill police Chief Will Lynd told KSLA.

It's very telling that people abandoned full shopping carts when the system came back on line.  They new they didn't have funds in their account, but were out for more freebies.

    The Louisiana governor’s office said Wednesday night that it would strip food stamp benefits from anyone who took advantage of an EBT card malfunction that in some cases caused an all-out shopping frenzy in some stores across the state, The Advocate reported.

    It is unclear how many recipients stand in line to lose benefits for a year, but more than 12,000 received an insufficient funds notice when the EBT card system was corrected on Oct.12, the report said.

    “We must protect the program for those who receive and use their benefits appropriately according to the law. We are looking at each case individually, addressing those recipients who are suspected of misrepresenting their eligibility for benefits or defrauding the system,” Suzy Sonnier, the secretary of state at the Department of Children and Family Services, said in a statement.

Sea, we live up here where we could never think our neighbors would do the same. But we here are no different from others in the big cities, human nature kicks in when an opportunity comes about.   

When the trucks came in to pick up our product at times there was left over produce from their last stop.   These had to be unloaded to make room for our product and was brought out on the floor for us workers to bring home.   Sometimes potato's or greens, big bags of turnips, and workers were leaving the lines to grab what they could.   

Anything especially food for free was a get it now.    I can understand the actions of the people that found they could get stuff for free, I do not approve but I can afford to buy what I want or need.

It is we who can afford to pay for our necessities that shake our heads in wonder at the actions of others that jump in and take advantage of free stuff.

And don't we all clip coupons, and shop the sales to save a buck or two.    We who go to consignment shops, and the Goodwill ETC. are we not looking for a steel no one has noticed?

I can not blame the shoppers that found they could buy food because of a glitch in the computers, what the heck to not take advantage of a once in a life time experience would have been really stupid. No their fault the computers went down, but when an opportunity comes up,  who can fault anyone for jumping in and taking advantage of it.

Glad you got this one and did such a good job of it.  Theft is theft.  To compare shopping for sales to deliberately stealing is… beyond my comprehension.  The store offers the items at sale price.  The state did not offer to give away our money because their computer went down.  FFS.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and his administration took steps late Wednesday to strip food stamp benefits from those who loaded up their shopping carts knowing they had insufficient funds in their Electronic Benefits Transfer accounts during a system failure in October.
