NHRA driver Scott Kalitta killed in 300 MPH crash and explosion.
I have never seen such a violent crash. He had no chance.

6/21/2008, 6:52 p.m. EDT
The Associated Press

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (AP) — Scott Kalitta died Saturday when his Funny Car crashed and burst into flames during qualifying for the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

State police confirmed that the 46-year-old Kalitta, a two-time Top Fuel champion who had 18 career victories, was killed in the accident.

Witnesses told The Star-Ledger of Newark that Kalitta's Toyota Solara was traveling at an estimated speed of 300 mph when the crash occurred.

I suggest you do a search for "Tim Russert". What that search will show is that you must start complaining about the dead person right away -- without a moment to waste -- and begin pointing out why who they were or what they did means they deserve no sympathy.

RIP Scott.

I remember your daddy racing. Connie Kalitta and 'Big Daddy' Don Garlits dominated the local racing scene. Those names bring back a lot of good memories of a kids summer.

12. Not when you're turning 250MPH and trying to see straight.
I used to build Street Rods.

The adrenaline in a 800+hp launch is pretty bracing.

But when shit starts going wrong, it can sure seem like a bad idea.

We should be humble in his presence. TiT is a man among men. A world traveler, highly decorated veteran of the Army/Navy/Marines, friend of the famous and powerful. Too many accolades to mention.

I don`t think so Tom.

26. Imagine it in a 7,000-horsepower Top Fueler or Funny Car
Zero to 100 in less than a second. Zero to about 330 mph in about 4.5 seconds.

I can't imagine that.

Not a problem for Tom though.

They were Connie, Don AND SHirley Muldowney were also big in IHRA as well as NHRA top fuel racing.

Remember the movie "Heart Like A Wheel"?

Interesting side note...Connie Kalitta also runs Kalitta Air...which had the 747 that split in two in Brussels a couple months ago.

A few car blogs get together and have run a $500 beater race for the last couple of years.  The $500 does not cover safety equipment, only the cost of the car.  This year's race was at Altamont Raceway.  One of the drivers was killed after his car hit the wall.

it was a huge shock.  :(

If they haven't taken it down yet, Jalopnik.com has ESPN footage of the accident.  Kalitta's car pretty much exploded.  It happened in the blink of an eye.

21. Kalitta Airways has a multi-million dollar contract with the govt.
Scott's famuly-owned airlines is contracted to bring dead US soldiers back to the US. They also carry other stuff, allegedgly including Iraqi prisoners in rendition flights. They lost a plane last month in Belgium when it split in half on takeoff.

Sorry about Scott but Kalitta is dirty.

45. Kalitta Air is no fly by night operation - or is it?
During the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict Kalitta Air made weapon resupply flights from the US to Israel, via Prestwick Airport in Scotland for refueling, without authority from the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority.

I remembered the brouhaha about the flights but I had no idea there were contract planes doing the work at the time.

Fox & Friends showed it this morning, with a warning beforehand.  Gruesome, burning to death like that.

It isn't as painful as you think.  I burned to death back in the mid 70's in Nam, I was driving a street rod at 1200 mph when it burst into flames.  I was proonounced dead when I was blown to pieces in the explosion.  Luckily my friends, the VIllage People revived me by playing a song I had written for them couple of days earlier.  If not for the Village People, you wouldn't get to see my son Larry Jones chase .400 this baseball season.

The safety equipment, the fire suit and a half minute's worth of air, probably kept him "comfortable" until he hit the wall. Anyway, there was little or no pain just that instant thought "This is not good,! OH SHIT!" That's what you think just before you hit, in my case, slow enough not to be hurt much. In his case, that flash of blue light , then infinity.

Thats what I was thinking.
That was the first time I saw all the safety mechanisms fail. He never slowed down.
