It’s been called the most important 26 seconds of film in history: The 486 frames of 8-millimeter Bell + Howell home movie footage shot in the midday sun of Dallas on November 22, 1963, by a dressmaker named Abraham Zapruder. Twenty-six seconds that included a historic, horrific, all-too-clear vision of a presidential assassination.

Most people vaguely know about the Zapruder film, but it will soon become omnipresent as the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy approaches. What is not well known, however, is that a single frame of it was kept largely secret from public view for 12 years after the assassination.

Frame 313. The frame that gave Abraham Zapruder nightmares, the frame he insisted be withheld from the public—a single frame of film that can be said to have changed American history and culture.

“We like to feel that the world is safe,” Errol Morris tells me. “Safe at least in the sense that we can know about it. The Kennedy assassination is very much an essay on the unsafety of the world. If a man that powerful, that young, that rich, that successful, can just be wiped off the face of the earth in an instant, what does it say about the rest of us?”

Interesting... three out of four murdered Presidents were Republicans.  And then there was Kennedy.

4 out of 4 presidential assassins have been extreme leftists of one stripe or another. Kinda tells ya what kind of profiling we need to be doing at political events where a president might be present.

  Why is this one archived? Why has the time frame for working the rifled changed 3 times over the years? Why didnt Oswald take the shot when the motorcade was approaching him head on . And lastly and most important , why dont ducks wear horseshoes?

Has it?  William Manchester, in Death of a President, states it as 2.3 seconds, which to this operator of a bolt-action rifle actually seems a bit long.  I haven't seen any other figure, even in Oliver Stone's well-researched, entirely unbiased documentary.

Have you ever been to Dealey Plaza and visited the sixth floor?  Given the distances involved and the possible axes of fire relative to the shooter's position, the shooter made the easier choice of the two alternatives.

Just for the record: from my readings, my experience with firearms, and from demonstrations I have seen televised, I believe someone did exactly what the Warren Commission said LHO did.  My only lingering doubt is whether it was LHO or someone else.

As I understand it, Zapruder didn't want the frame that showed the actual chunk of Kennedy's head as it skittered across the trunk of the car publicized. Too graphic.

Jackie actually went to retrieve that chunk of skull, which explains why her dress was bloodstained.

  The main squawk I have is why is it archived for 75 years ? I've seen  3 different versions  of the time frame reported on TV. 3.2 , 5 something seconds and 7 seconds .
