A gun battle inside a shopping centre in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, has left at least nine people dead, according to witness reports.

Gunfire is ongoing and armed police are at the Westgate centre in the Westlands district - one of the city's most exclusive shopping malls. The gunmen are reported to be carrying assault rifles and wearing combat fatigues.

One witness who spoke to Al Jazeera from inside the mall said the centre was busy with Saturday afternoon shoppers.

Another witness said the attackers threw grenades into the building at about midday local time (09:00 GMT).

Security going into shopping malls is pretty tight in Nairobi.

But, this is a very upscale mall in what is otherwise a very impoverished city. I felt ill at east there when I visited.

I can understand why this particular place may have been targeted.

Actually the dots go from al-Shabab, to al Q'aeda (Of al-Shabab is an affiliate), and then on to a certain shithead in DC who claimed the said al Q'aeda was on the ropes and dying out thanks to his incredible fortitude and genius, plus a few Navy guys and helos that happened to be incidentally involved.

Mark Steyn was saying today that some of the gunmen were from London and American cities.  Why didn't king zero's NSA spying pick up on this?  There must have been chatter back here.  Useless ****.
