"The issue was discussed," spokesman Dmitry Peskov said by telephone. He would not say who raised the issue or give other details.


So, Kerry was not speaking off the cuff, and this was not a surprise to Obama, nor was it dumb luck.

1. Yes, we have considered a secondary sanction.

I agree that some people have shown that they are not dissuaded by the public shaming of having a visible transparency page. Some of them have even said as much right here on DU.

I also agree that reasonable posters make an effort to avoid getting their posts hidden. It really isn't that difficult.

I think DU as a whole would be better off if the people who kept getting their posts hidden would make an effort and stop posting things that get hidden. If they don't care, then I think it is in our interest to make them care. We have an idea that would do that -- and I think we are very likely to implement it.

To any DUers who keep getting posts hidden: Now is a good time to start figuring out how to not get your posts hidden. Because change is coming...

You'd have to be pretty stupid to not think that the Obama administration and Putin's government were not in regular talks about Syria for a long, long time now. Clearly, Obama and Putin don't get along, but its also very likely that neither really wants the armed conflict in Syria to spread, or to include Chemical Weapons.

But Russia isn't going to vote YES on a military strike on Syria, at the UN. Never going to happen.

So our diplomats, and their diplomats looked for, and found, a path forward that would not include military strikes. We had to keep up the pressure of strikes (and not bluff) and Russia had to go tell Assad, "they aren't bluffing".

But according to the folks on DU who so incorrectly predicted a 2nd Iraq war for about 3 weeks now ... what happened is that Putin came up with this humanitarian offer simply because he's a swell guy.

See ... apparently, it went down like this .... President Obama was sitting in the oval office playing with some toy missiles, when Putin called and said, "Hey bro, listen up ... I'll get Assad to give up the Chem weapons cause your in a real jam, so don't sweat it, I got your back, my main man!!"

Or some approximation of that ... from what I'm reading from the Combustible Hair Club today.

A) IF it had been discussed and Obama thought it was such a great idea, why did he wait to publicly accept it? Why didn't he jump on it from the start since he KNEW he was gonna get his ass kicked by congress over a military action?

B) WHY give the initiative to the Russians? At least make it a joint announcement, so it would LOOK like he knew what he was doing?

C) Why have the SOS make it sound like some sort of afterthought?

None of what you claim makes ANY sense in a world where Obama supposedly knows what he is doing. All of it makes him look like an idiot. Which leads to the final question of...

D) Why in the hell would he let himself look like an idiot?

Last I knew, Kerry was frothing at the mouth and made some off the cuff remarks and the state department doubled down on the fact that Assad can't be trusted. Now less than a day later he can and the White House saved the day.
I don't ascribe incompetence to the president but on the other hand, he didn't out maneuver anyone on this.
Made up stories to push a misguided belief that the president is a cross between Einstein and Gandhi. He is a politician.

The President and Putin discussed this option last Friday. There was a legitimate offer on the table when Kerry made his remarks. The pressure of military action, and the commitment by the President to go forward with our without Congressional approval showed strength and leadership and forced Syria/Russia hand to find a peaceful way out. Unlike the Iraq fiasco, Syria has admitted to being in possession of WMD/Gas and have now agreed to put them in independent control. isn't that the ultimate goal of all this.

A ) Why waste time and money seeking authorization for a tiny strike for no reason ?

B ) Why has Russia declared a condition of the Syrian weapons handover being the strike authorization can never happen ?

C ) If the United States is on the side of the rebels, why did we just throw them under the bus ? Sure, the Assad regime can't poison them, but he can still obliterate them with massive conventional ordinance. -Last I checked, dead is dead.

No matter what happens, it's a good deal all the way around for Putin. He looks both powerful and statesmanlike; his client in Damascus is spared any outside intervention, probably for the duration of Dear Leader's term; and international inattention will invariably assure that the promise to dismantle Syria's chemical-weapons stocks (not an easy task even from a technical standpoint) will not be fulfilled.

I'll add one other thing. In a mordant way, it is fitting that this crisis seemingly ended with an administration gaffe, because that's also the way it began. Obama was foolishly blathering out loud last year when he set a "red line" against the use of chemical weapons, but he trapped himself into making it U.S. policy, then demanded Congress and the world back it up.
