Good for you. Hope they give you a big pay raise.
Got a call from a good friend of mine yesterday who retired from the state that went to work for Bass Pro Shop selling boats part time. They put him on full time cause he was doing such a good job. After working there for over a year, they offered him a 30 cents an hour raise. He gave them his 2 week notice.
GIVE ME A BREAK that 30 cents an hour adds up to almost $576.00 a year extra with no overtime. Who turns down that money when they also receive retirement. Did he also get commission on the boats he sold ??
30 cents an hour for 40 hours comes out to $12.00 a week, just chuck that extra money in a 401 K and in 2 more years have a stash started. May even get another raise in that time, another 30 cents an hour and now you are rolling.
Civilian work is much different from either State work or Federal work. It took me 20 years to hang on to a job with a 5 cent a year raise, always a race to stay ahead of the new untrained workers coming in with the change of laws in minimin wages. After 7-8 years it seemed like the new workers started work that we a rate that we had to work 6 years before getting.
Benefits, Yup 2-3 weeks vacation paid, I retired with 5 weeks paid. Company gave me a dollar for dollar match for the 401K up to 10% and the low cost health insurance..
Great company, non American but not Asian.
A small Franchise like Bass Pro must have thought highly of your friend, few small businesses can after a year or so give a raise to a worker of 30 cents an hour unless they had bigger plans for them.
Your friend was a Jerk, walking away from a semi-new job like that.--
So what's your friend going to do now that he at his age walked away from opportunity to in perhaps another 10 years given him a great life style in his later years ??

Sea congrats, I was about your age when I began my last job, seniority does count as do the perks.
Hang on there, the body aches and sore feet have a way of going away when you get your paycheck, vacation or company perks.
