Arrested for playing a banjo? Ony in Philly!
FROM FACEBOOK:

EMILY YATES, UKELELE SUPERSTAR, BUSTED @ the LIBERTY BELL, PHILLY
Emily, I am so pissed about the Fed National Parks Rangers treatment of you, when 7 of these pigletts jumped, and hog tied you, just for being your beautiful self, at today's NO WAR with SYRIA rally, at Philly's Independence Mall, just a couple yards away from the 1st Amendment, Monument, and the Liberty Bell. Unfortunately, a 3PM arrest in Philly, on a Saturday, doesn't get in front of a Bail Magistrate until 9 AM, Sunday. There should be some great You Tubes up, by Tonight. PHILLY 's Emily Yates!

Please send all the love, light and strength you can muster to Emily Yates and her husband Erik.. Emily is an Iraqi Veteran Against the War (IVAW), and was attending a peaceful protest in Philly Saturday against the war in Syria when she was horribly and brutally arrested, apparently because she was standing in the wrong place playing her banjo..
Here's an update from her husband Erik:
As many of you already know, Emily was arrested today while playing music on the Independence Mall in Philadelphia. She has not been formally charged with anything and none of us have been able to figure out where she's being held. She has apparently not been allowed any communication with the outside world. I will post more details on her situation as they arise. I will also post a link to her defense fund once it is up and running.

3. Those bastards...She looks like she's in pain!

What are those pigs doing to her that she should look that way?

May this develop into a nice lawsuit against the department and/or the city.

One can only hope.

4. It's all about pain compliance now

If you make the piggy mad or you don't follow his instructions fast enough they will make you pay. That is why almost every arrest these days has them on their face with 5 cops knees all over their body. They even do this to children and the elderly. They use their knees in your ribs, your neck, and the back of your knees. All to inflict the most pain. They will also shove fingers into the back of your ear and other painful pressure points. Then your arms are forced behind your back in the most uncomfortable way possible and forced upward towards the head.
Here is a cop breaking a little girl's arm using this technique:

I could settle for being an Akron cop.

5. They know what they did is wrong

The power fears us. It's good to know they don't sleep well and have to lie to their children about what they do.

Fear you? WTF!!!!!  Thanks for the morning laugh.

IF it's true she was arrested for playing music, and not for -- I dunno -- blocking the sidewalk or something,

THEN the cops were wrong to arrest her.

And IF they were right to arrest her, and she offered no more than passive resistance,

THEN the cops were wrong to use any kind of pain infliction to move her or effect the arrest.

Realizing that DUmmies lie all the time*, I recognize that it is possible that she was actually committing an offense, and that she attempted to assault the cops who up until that point were merely talking to her.  I want to hear the charges, and "disobeying the orders of an officer" don't cut it if the orders were unlawful to begin with.  And I want to see the bruise or bite mark or cut she inflicted on a cop before any of them tried to touch her.

I care not the ideology, or the content of the music.  My reaction would be the same to a rendition of "God Bless America" or "The Internationale."

It is safe to assume that cops lie all the time, too, especially when justifying their actions.

It's legal for cops to lie to you.

As to the arrest, it was after the park closed. They asked her nicely to leave and she refused. She wanted to continue her pot rally.

They do, as a matter of fact, though for the most part they tell as much of the truth as they can without getting into the ugly details that might get them in trouble, and then generally outright lie only about those.  Like all of us, they reflect the society from which they come, and especially since Billy Jeff's impeachment hugger-mugger, lying to save your own ass is increasingly acceptable socially, if not legally, though rarely punished in the latter case.

Occupiers are well trained in the art of propaganda. If a cop even looks at one funny, they will fall to their knees and cry out in wails of pain. The real reasons for arrest will never ever be released to the public by the liberal side, they will lie, lie, LIE. Occupiers love the outward image of oppressed young people, but inside they are fascist to the core.

These are people who hate property rights. they find free speech and dissenting views to be a threat. Every single article in the bill of rights is in the line of fire. They speak freedom, but they plot a brutal dictatorship. The war on terror is being turned away from muslims and onto their political enemies. They want to criminalize politics for all but themselves.

The bottom line is the Occupiers and liberal activists are evil. Occupiers have been arrested for acts of terror before. Its only a matter of time before they start killing. hence they want guns out of law abiding hands.
But with or without guns they will kill. It's only a matter of time.

It's a shame there isn't any video of what she was doing to catch the attention of the police to start with.
I don't think it was sitting peacefully, strumming the 'ol banjo.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

Someone should tell the DUmmies she was protesting against an 0bama war, not a Bush war.  :-)

This is one of the problems with everyone videoing everything that happens, it makes it harder in some cases to see what actually happened. 2 minutes with no other context doesn't show what lead up to this. For all I know she may have done something to deserve being arrested or maybe the cops were just being jackwagons. Unlike the DUmmies I am not going to jump on a bandwagon to try to score political points.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

For several minutes that cops calmly asked her to leave. She refused. Then when they began arresting her, she tried to make it difficult.

Let's say the the reason the cops wanted her to leave was a BS one. I would think the best thing to do would be just leave, as instructed, and then speak to a supervisor.

Maybe I'm wrong.

I wonder if she tried the classic "Don't arm lock me bro" before it escalated to arrest? Too bad as that may have defused the situation.

From some of the comments and from what the one Officer says early on in the video, they were simply enforcing the "posted" closing time of the park.  She and her message were so important, the officers should have taken it upon themselves to amend the rules established by their superiors.

They told me if I voted for Mitt Romney there would be a huge police state that would forcibly arrest war protestors.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Me too.

I'm tired of these wannabe "martyrs" who equate themselves with those who've really put their lives on the line (and generally lost) for a principle--those who opposed Stalin, Mao, Lenin, Hitler, Chavez, Castro, Ortega, il-Sung, Allende, Brezhnev, Ho, Amin, Hussein, &c., &c., &c.

If these had been socialist cops, her fate would've been less happy, her life extirpated, her body shattered.

I was in London at the week-end, and having suffered at the hands of several buskers if she was playing a 'musical' instrument then the police were too gentle to her whatever they did.
