Rangel: Bring back the draft before launching air strikes in Syria

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) on Sunday renewed his call to reinstate the draft, arguing a vote should be held on mandatory military service before any decision is taken to launch strikes against Syria.

“I truly believe we should have a National Draft Act before the Congress acts,” Rangel told MSNBC.

Rangel, a decorated veteran of the Korean War, has for several years introduced legislation to bring back the draft and earlier this, for the first time, advocated that women should be included.

The New York lawmaker said the burden of war unfairly falls on lower-income Americans.

“They are not in the Hamptons. They are not in the wealthy neighborhoods,” he said.

This is nothing more than Rangel getting his name in the news again.

Rangel is almost as bad as Rep. Jose Serrano (oddly enough, a Dem also from NY) who submits a bill to end presidential term limits.

It's a big f'n media ploy and nothing else.

Charlie, STFU and slink back in that slimehole that you came from.

Uh, yeah, Charlie?

Bullshit.

When I was recruiting, we had data on everyone who tried to join, came into DEP, and shipped.  Our EDSPEC (Educational Specialist) had a very comprehensive set of data on our folks called STEAM data.  It was extremely accurate and showed that it was in fact MORE likely for someone from the upper quintile family income to enlist than the lowest quintile.

That data was not a local anomaly.  It was verified nationally.  And it still holds true 15 years later.

I not only agree with your analysis, I think the all volunteer defense force has been a huge success. I think in many ways it is measurably better than during any draft.

The nice bonus for Rangel is he knows full well an attack against Syria won't happen so he gets to have his cake and eat it.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Sparky, sometimes I wish I could dredge up some of the Seacoast forum. I seem to remember a big argument, a debate that got nasty, in regards to the draft.

Well, I have to give it to the corrupt old windbag, at least he's consistent on this issue.  He did it to Bush, and now he's doing it to Obama.  Of course, in the absence of a TRUE imminent, large-scale national security threat, the like of which hasn't been seen in the memory of most Americans, the proposal has zero chance of being enacted on its own merits, and it would be the last thing in the world the armed forces rally need to **** up their day even worse than it already is, as they are currently structured and resourced.
