Don’t panic, but the bubonic plague is back

A 15-year-old boy from a mountain village in Kyrgyzstan has died from bubonic plague and three more have been hospitalized in the Central Asian country.

Temirbek Isakunov is believed to have contracted the fatal disease from eating barbecued marmot.

This is the first reported case of bubonic plague in 30 years, reports the Mirror. A total of 131, including medical personnel, have been quarantined, although no one other than the three hospitalized have shown any symptoms of the disease, according to the Guardian.

This presents a risk to Russia, who do not require a visa to travel between to or from Kyrgyzstan. Another risk factor is the fact that about half a million Kyrgyz people work in Russia full-time.

Damn! Now I can't have my barbecued marmot!

Uh, there was bubonic plague in the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants back in the mid-1990s, when I was there.

In fact, that was about the only instance where I wasn't allowed to go and look at something, provided I provided some authority with some vodka.

I'm sure there were other diseases too, but not being a medical expert.....

White deer mice up in the Sierras are a problem also.  Not with the plague but the hanta virus which is just as bad. Probably even more lethal.  Both diseases are actually cause by fleas that infect small rodents.

Do a search on prairie dogs and bubonic plague.  It cycles in the colonies as far as rates of death, but is always there.  I never let the kids bring them home, and warned them not to touch them.

Better the bubonic plague than the progressive plague.

They are often the cause of multiple incest bites.

For an interesting read on the subject check out The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story is a best-selling 1994 non-fiction bio-thriller by Richard Preston about the origins and incidents involving viral hemorrhagic fevers, particularly ebolaviruses and marburgviruses. The basis of the book was Preston's 1992 New Yorker article "Crisis in the Hot Zone".

It's misdiagnosed a lot.  The virus can take weeks before it makes you feel sick.  Comes on like the flu and turns into pneumonia.  There is no cure for it and few people survive it.

I'm sure there's an urban myth accompanying the news that involved blankets and Ward Churchill.
