A senior labour leader with the Canadian Auto Workers union confronted Americans buying Asian cars recently about their choices and compared Japanese car dealers to the enemy in the Second World War, according to a union summary of the trip.

Ron Carlyle, the CAW's chair representing workers at General Motors Corp.'s car plant in Oshawa, Ont., spoke at a GM union leadership meeting this past spring about a trip he took to a NASCAR event in the United States. Minutes of the meeting, dated March 20 and posted on the CAW Local 222 website, describe what Mr. Carlyle said.

"Ron spoke about NASCAR trip. He questioned Americans buying Kia, Toyota, Honda. Reminded them of 9/11. 'Would you buy from Iraqi or Afghani dealerships?' Their response was 'No!' So Ron asked 'Why do you buy from Japanese dealers?  - What about Pearl
Harbour?'"

Mr. Carlyle was one of the CAW leaders who recently travelled to GM's headquarters in Detroit to attempt to convince the company's senior executives to reverse a decision to shut down the Oshawa truck plant next year. The union has so far failed in attempts to keep the factory open.

When the Auto Workers Union quits supporting Socialist political candidates AND when the US auto industry can build a $20000 car that has a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty and a 10 year powertrain warranty (Kia and Hyundai), maybe I'll think about buying one.

I agree.

I buy the best for my buck.

So do most others.

When the Auto Workers Union quits supporting Socialist political candidates...

Many of the unions simply don't have a choice, republican candidates tend to be so staunchly anti-union it's often just not possible.   :thatsright:

Bovine manure.

Unions have dug their own grave.

hahahahaha

aren't nearly all of those "asian" cars assembled in the USA ?
My fellow Americans, there is nothing audacious about hope. Hope is what makes people buy lottery tickets instead of paying the bills. Hope is for the old gals feeding the slots in Atlantic City. It destroys the inner-city kid who quits school because he hopes he'll be a world-famous recording artist.

What's the difference between Sarah Palin and Barack Obama?

One is a well turned-out, good-looking, and let's be honest, pretty sexy piece of eye-candy.

The other kills her own food.

Aren't all of those "right to work" states?  ie. no unions.

I know some are union but I think you're correct about the right-to-work part meaning that one need not be a union member to hold a job.  I cannot believe any state would ever NOT be a right to work state.

I've lived in Japan for 7 years.  This country is a second home to me.  The Japanese are our friends, and allies, and the actions of World War 2 are a chapter long behind us.  For this asshat to dig at that and try to stir sentiment against the Japanese is probably one of the lowest and most decietful things I've ever seen.

He's calling these people our enemies.  Just like he labelled the Iraqi and Afghani people are enemies.  They are not, and I will tell anyone who claims other wise to go **** themselves with the wide end of a shovel.
