Pretty good older DU OP featuring a quote from Mike Rowe of Ditry Jobs fame.
Worth suiting up and swimming in the swill. I will just post the quote you are on your own for their comments.
Ever hire a liberal arts major to fix your backed up toilet? Naw, me neither.
One company that will remain nameless in my area ran well until they bought another plant that was not producing well. This new plant was closed down and the mechanics sent up here.
The expert mechanics came in to be trained by the mechanics of the old factory and within a couple months everything went to hell. The older mechanics knew ever nut and bolt of the place, most had been there 20+ years. The new mechanics had their own ideas, average age was 25 and making close to the same wages as those with years of experience with the machinery.
Months went by when the lines and machinery were down for hours, none of them , the new guys, had any idea how to fix anything. The old timers sat backed and laughed when some young upstart messed up and all the lines ran backward. What did the old timers care they were close to retirement and worried about being laid off for some one much younger.
Trade jobs are so much different from the Educated 4 year college graduates, a teacher can graduate and step into a teaching job at $40,000 a year. Trade school kids start at the bottom and have to keep up on training and schools forever.
Teachers may have to work 10 years to be paid $55,000 a year. In 10 years a trade school graduate is making $65,000 and each year the money goes up. Teachers usually do not get paid overtime, those in the work force do.
Surprised me that the office workers were on salary, we who did the so called dirty work made if we worked overtime thousands of dollars more then them. Office workers who had a 2 year Associate degree made less then the workers that could not speak English.
I have been on this band wagon for years, we NEED more skilled workers, Crane Operaters, welders and both mechanics and plumbers to keep the city's running. Come winter we need skilled men and woman to drive those Hugh state snow plows not someone that just graduated from Beauty College.
