Taboo..... jobs
« on: June 19, 2008, 09:56:30 AM »
Me and the wife were watching this series last night on Nat Geo called "Taboo", and the show was about jobs that normal people really wouldn't do. What intrigued me was this one called "Crime Scene"... this company that goes and cleans up after a death. Mostly messy suicides and people who have died days and weeks ago and get rid of the body tissues and bodily fluids. They had one guy cleaning up the under carriage of a train after a man threw himself inbetween two cars in a suicide attempt cleaning bits of clothes and hair and tissue out of the undercarriage. I don't think I could do that. I'd have to have a bucket near me all the time to toss my cookies in.

Did anybody else see it?

I have a family member who owns such a company. Not the one profiled. In fact, he's never been interviewed. He always declines when asked.

There has been a distinct grey area concerning this task. Police, rescue workers, crime scene techs, etc...are not allowed nor legally obligated to do any kind of clean up or restoration. For a long time, that has fallen on the family members. It is a horrible thing for someone to deal with. As much as it makes us want to throw up (and yes, I have a REALLY hard time with it) imagine what the victim's family feels when they walk back into their property to see what's left behind. It's traumatic to say the least.

I've seen the commericals for that series. I have to admit, I'm kind of glad we don't get Nat Geo LOL!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Well, that wasn't really the worse, but yeah, that is part of their job.. making sure family members or landlords don't have to deal with the sick messes left behind.

What the major kicker was here is when they profiled a group from the University of Tennessee having "body fields". This woman and a team of other workers took bodies (that were donated, and they actually have a WAITING LIST to be dumped in their "body fields" to study decomposition of human bodies after death. I tell ya, it made me wanna wretch almost. But they do it to help in police and crime scene investigations to tell how long they body has been there and they put a lot of variables in it, such as if the victim or body was wearing clothes, humidity, how they are buried or not buried, etc.

By the way, I usually only watch Nat Geo for The Dog Whisperer. Last night there really wasn't anything else on TV though, so there ya go.

They showed the Body Farm? COOL! Yes, I'm a weirdo. :-)

Dr. Bass is a legend in his field and I've read tons of his work and the books he's authored. (He's officially retired but he started the UT program and still consults) He has done so much for forensic anthropology. He basically invented the modern techniques used to solve death investigations. A true genius. I would love to meet him in person.

I had first heard of "The Body Farm" in a book by Patricia Cornwell, who wrote a book by the same name.

Cornwell has had a long standing professional relationship with Dr. Bass. She wrote that book with his blessing.

And yes, she's gone over the edge. She was crucified for her last Scarpetta novel. And rightly so. On top of being full of B.D.S., she really trashed the beloved characters she's worked so hard to build up. I am officially done with her books.

That describes it perfectly....however, I might have to read her next (final?) one to see how she resolves the issues left hanging.

The last one I read was Black Notice. I've bought 2 since then but haven't been able to get interested in them.  Something about her writing style changed.

The early books are excellent. She started to go off the rails with Blow Fly. Mostly because she changed narrative style. And she stretched the bounds of reality in terms of character behavior. Also, her nonfiction book about Jack the Ripper was criticized a lot. In fact, I couldn't even finish it. She spent millions of her own money to research the book and buy aritfacts to examine. The book was hard to read in my opinion.

Dixie, have you read the book Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach?

A very interesting book into all the various things bodies donated to science end up doing.  There's a chapter on the Body Farm in it as well.

Agreed.  I just don't like her books nearly as much as I used to.

I love books like this.

I read it years ago right after it first came out.  Then I told my best friend, who was going into her first year of medical school about it.  She eventually had most of her class read it.

By the way, I usually only watch Nat Geo for The Dog Whisperer. Last night there really wasn't anything else on TV though, so there ya go.

I like watching the Dog Whisperer when they have a hot big bressteded dog owner on.   :naughty:

I like watching Biography or Notorious on A&E.

They had Dana Plato's bio on last night.    Talk about tragic and sad.   That girl was doomed from birth.    She's definiitely a cautionary tale to these young knuckleheads like Nicole Richie, Britney, LiLo, Amy Whinehouse, etc.
