Senseo coffee maker equivalent?

When I was in Switzerland, there was an old single-cup coffee (espresso) machine that used little round pods, kind of like teabags.
 
We do have a fancy schmancy automatic espresso maker, but this thing made stronger coffee, which I love. To get that with our machine, the beans have to be so dark -- and thus oily -- they clog up the machinery.
 
The one in Switzerland was so little and simple, I was sure that if I could find one, it'd be relatively cheap. When I started looking around online, I realized it was probably an older model Senseo. Then I looked at the prices -- YIKES!! They're about $500.
 
There are used ones on eBay, but those seem slightly yucky or very pricey.

(It seems the American-market "equivalent" is a Hamilton Beach drip machine, like the ones in hotels. Not the same at all.)
 
Any suggestions for a) a similar but less-expensive machine, or b) dark but not-so-oily beans for the automatic one?

1. How about a Keurig?

They use the single serve K-cups.

I really like mine...... and I'm kind of a coffee "snob".

2. Not only that, you can get refillable k-cup knockoffs that drop the price of the brew while opening up the possibility of using different blends.
 
Keurig sounds about the closest the OP will get to the Swiss machine.

Espresso stuff is silly.  Little tiny cups that are empty in three swallows.
I'll take a pint sized mug of regular stuff, any day.
If I feel rebellious, I'll put some cream in it, and maybe some sugar.

She says she was in Switzerland and did not want to drink her coffee with the Swiss Chocolate added ?

What an Ugly American to visit a foreign country and not try their national brew.   

Only wonderful thing I was taught by an American Sailor that was better then sex was the coffee with real Swiss Chocolate.

I have two super-automatic espresso machines, a Gaggia and a Saeco.  She's buying her beans at Starbucks, they over roast everything.  Both machines had warnings NOT to use Starbucks beans in them, guess she didn't bother to read the manual.

She could do what I do, and roast her own beans, but that would take time away from her banging tourists in Ellicott City.

I am frequent traveler and I subscribe to a  frequent traveler site that sends out fun and interesting tidbits and lists ("top 10 packing mistakes" and the like).

One of the best ones was "top 10 ways to be a travel douchebag."  Number one on the list is to O-So-Casually mention exotic locations like they are the corner store ("Hey, can anyone help me find a local spot in downtown Zurich? My old haunt is closing down and I haven't found any good replacement...").

So true.

I'll bring up the spots I have been to if or am in if they are immediately on point, but other than that REAL travelers don't backhand brag.

In many uncivilized parts of the world they drink that "espresso" crap.

They serve it in tiny little plastic pill cups, not more than one full sip.

It's almost gritty with coffee residue.

Coffee snobs are every bit as annoying and condescending as beer snobs or wine "experts".

When ever I see abstract art I get tempted to go buy some oil paints and canvas to see if I can convince art connoisseurs to give me money.  :p
