Sources told Egypt Independent that Russian President Vladimir Putin called for an extraordinary session at the Russian Kremlin to discuss the situation in Egypt and take the necessary steps to put the Russian military facilities “at the Egyptian military’s disposal”. Putin will discuss Russian arrangements for joint-military exercises with the Egyptian army according to source.

But I also think a big part of this is to undermine our interests, or at least our influence.  It's also a way to embarrass and poke a stick in Obama's eye, as he just cancelled our planned military exercises with the Egyptian Army.

Egypt was aligned with the Soviet Union until the early 70's.  The Soviets lost basically all influence in the region after that.

The Suez is the big prize, however the Russians hate the Bro-hood as much as the Egyptian Army does, which is why they're offering their support now...the Bruthas were an outlawed terrorist organization under Mubarak, and Obama supported legalizing them after he and Hitlery knifed Mubarak in the back - now the Egyptian Army is making noises about outlawing them all over again, because they really are an armed and dangerous terrorist organization.  Obama has been very ambiguous about the Bros, while the Russians at least have a very clear and consistent position against them and their fellow travelers.
