With heavy hearts we share with you that Nathaniel has found peace across the Rainbow Bridge. Nathaniel was rescued in December 2012 from a dog-fight ring in Dolton. He and his companions were rescued mid-fight through the heroic actions of the Dolton Police Department, Cook County Sheriff’s Department, and SSHS Humane Investigators. For the past 8 months, Nathaniel has known the love of humans, a comfortable bed, and good food (which included weekly car-rides for cheeseburgers or ice cream with his loving volunteer guardians in the driver’s seat). Despite countless hours of training, SSHS could not undo the years of damage done to Nathaniel through his dog fight training. After multiple and repeated efforts to find him alternative placement and following a major incident involving his attack of another dog in our care, we had to make the decision that was in the best interest of the other dogs in the shelter, for other dogs in the communities we serve, and in his ultimate best interest. Dana Cortez, Lauren Payne, Sara Stonitsch, and Geordi Wadell poured a part of their heart into his care. In his last moments, he was held by this strong group of people as he left this broken world to run pure and free in another.Emily Klehm
