I think so, the feelings of tradition seem to have a great hold on many Americans. Since 99% of Presidents have been white males, this is what many people expect. (Note: this is not how I personally feel about who should be president)

I would have been more than happy with Allen West, Herman Cain or maybe even Elbert Guillory.  I'd rather have any of them than John McCain.

Why don't they ever look beyond skin-colour?

Every conservative, indeed every sane person, I've ever met merely wants good, competent, sound government leaders...Obama fails on those grounds rather than his being half black.

Obama is from class 3 and Hillary is from class 4......and nobody had any use for class 4.

I think that the DUmmy rule, roughly speaking, is as follows.

1 - if you're a liberal then you're not racist
2 - if you're a conservative/republican and you take race into account, then you're racist for taking race into account
3 - if you're a conservative/republican and you ignore race, then you're racist for ignoring race

This, naturally, simplifies to
1 - if you're a liberal then you're not racist
2 - if you're a conservative/republican then you are racist
