Blum asked the president about the American dream, saying, "Part of the American dream -- even if you're poor, or lower-middle class -- involves yearning for tangible things you can't afford. Were there things, when you were growing up, that you yearned for that you couldn't afford?"Obama responded, speaking about a shift in the expectations of the American dream. He said that the dream used to involve a good home, a good job, and the possibility of higher education. Growing up today, however, children are exposed to such wealth in the form of celebrities' lifestyles that everything seems smaller by comparison. Speaking on his own experience, Obama said, "There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous."He went on to critique the over-the-top lives of West and Kardashian and the effect that they have on young people, explaining, "Kids weren't monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success."
