An attempt to appear salient and clever using some non-existent moral failing on the part of conservatives that itself fails so miserably not even fellow liberals will buy into it.

I am shocked--shocked that SC doesn't require the noncustodial parent to pay for college for their

kids.

I mean, when you consider how red and conservative SC is, and how conservatives claim to be in favor of "family values"
(which means whatever the speaker wants it to mean, as Humpty Dumpty said to Alice in Wonderland.).

What about your state?

Got that?

Conservative family values demand you support adult offspring.

Never mind the conservative family value that says children should be raised to be self-sufficient adults.

Let the PLONKing begin:

1. I am curious

Does any state require a noncustodial parent to pay for their child's college.
I thought once the child turns 18 that was it.
Just curious as I have no children/grandchildren in this position.

2. I rather doubt any state does that

going to college isn't a requirement but an option; first-year college students are generally 18, which is the age when child support stops in any case.

Quote
MineralMan (56,203 posts)

3. Do they require custodial parents or

married couples to pay for college for their children? I know of no such laws in any state.

And it goes on like that.

If the kid goes to college, the noncustodial parent pays........and pays......unless the noncustodial parent is a DUmmie, in which case, they probably have never paid for so much as some pampers.

How often does it happen where there's liberal outrage that it's not both preposterous and desperately needing knowledge to be applied? All the time, that's how often. You may have formed the title of the newest best seller.

Welcome to Illinois where children never grow up.

Quote
Illinois Divorce: Forced To Pay For Your Child’s College

In Illinois, the court may, in its discretion, order parents to contribute to their child’s college expenses. Illinois law refers to this financial responsibility as “non-minor support.”

While the Illinois statute governing non-minor support does not make it a mandatory requirement that parents contribute to their child’s college expenses, it has become customary for judges in Illinois to commonly order parents to do so.

The college expenses covered by non-minor support usually include tuition, room & board, book fees, registration, application fees, and other costs due to the university, and may also include contribution to the child’s living expenses, transportation costs, health insurance and medical and dental expenses, as well as other college expenses the court finds in its discretion are reasonable.

Duration of Non-Minor Support

The Illinois statute expressly limits a parent’s responsibility to contribute to the college expenses of the child only through the attainment of a bachelor’s degree.

An order setting forth a non-minor support obligation may include additional limitations on the parents’ financial support, such as terminating non-minor support in the event the child is not enrolled as a full-time student or is not remaining in good standing with the educational institution (e.g., the child’s Grade Point Average falls below a certain threshold set by the educational institution).

I used to work with a guy that was divorced, and his child support actually went up when his son went to college.

Shhhhh...that's not "progressive" of you.

But my father was more than happy to sign for me to enlist at 17.

Me too.  Graduated HS when I was 17 and a month later was on a plane headed to basic training.

I'm not sure but I think Nebraska used to make the non custodial parent pay for support while the kid is in college. Not pay for the college itself.

Now that 26 year old "children" are on the parents health ins, the feds should force parents to pay for the "kids" college expenses as well.  Makes about as much sense.

Was in my mid 20's when I shipped off to boot camp. I chose not to walk for graduation recently and some of the younger members of my class were up in arms about it. "You need to walk so the people that paid for your school can see it". They shut up when I informed them that I didn't think that the VA was planning on sending a representative. It never occurred to them that someone other than mommy and daddy funded my education.

I didn't walk for my graduation from college either.

Then again, I paid for it.  Not Unca Suga, or mommy or daddy.

Even with the GI bill paying I still took classes more seriously than they did. Many seemed to think that college is just an extension of high school. Many washed out and I graduated at the top of my class. Funny though you could tell who was prior military. We were always on time and prepared for class.

Non traditional students (I was too on my second try at college) almost always do better than their traditional college counterparts.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

I went to college pretty much on my own.  I had to navigate the labyrinthine Financial Aid maze pretty much on my own (my Mom was a big believer that once you can cook your own dinner, you should navigate life on your own -- and she was RIGHT!) as well as the overall college application process.

I only lived on campus dorms (a requirement at Pepperdine for Freshmen) for 2 trimesters, then moved off campus (to Heathercliff Road on The Point).

The worst thing you can do to an adult is infantilize him/her.  But not only do liberals do so, they accept it with open arms.
