CLEVELAND - A man condemned to death for fatally stabbing a neighbor during a Cleveland burglary was found hanged in his cell Sunday just days before his Wednesday execution.

Billy Slagle, 44, was found hanging in his cell about 5 a.m. at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution south of Columbus, prison spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said. He was declared dead within the hour.

No other details were immediately provided.

Slagle was sentenced to die for the 1987 stabbing of Mari Anne Pope, who was killed while two young children she was watching were in the house.

We don't support convicts serving a life sentence forever. We support them until they die.

Like it or not, there is a fundamental difference between a life sentence and a death sentence. Under the former, nature takes its course. Under the latter, the state accelerates the aging process to the point that the perp, once all the interminable appeals have run their f'n courses, enjoys an early death.

There is a certain punishment factor that needs to be considered when depriving a person of their physical freedom. If it's done right (and I'm talking what they do in a Supermax prison, for example, when the bastard gets one hour per day outside of his cell), there is no hell on earth quite like staring at 4 concrete walls and a ceiling for 23 hours per day -- for decades.

Meals in the cell. No contact with humans, other than the food bringer and the guard that lets him out for his shower  and exercise.

Let them rot until the Grim Reaper comes of his own accord. Save the truly terminally violent and dangerous people for the needle.

Now I am interested in what happens to the female prisoners who are in prison for life.  Such as Jodi Arius  and the crazy woman that kill their children.  How are the woman on death row treated, is it different from the males or the same ?

Are woman treated differently then men in a for life prison  just curious as I have seen some documentaries about the worse of the worse females that seem to be allowed to walk about the grounds and take classes for education I do not see the men getting.

Back a hunnert years ago when I was taking this stuff in school... I had a class "Penology" (yes, I have heard all the jokes) and we had to tour different facilities in IL.

Went to the state peniteniary in Joliet.. so creepy. Got patted down before going in. That was where the worst of the worst went in IL. It's closed down now.



Also, went to Dwight which was a max security for women, and while bad, it wasn't near as bad as Joliet.

Both are closed now.

Went to St Charles which is where the medium facility is for juveniles.... it just made me sad. It did, and still does, house boys who commit all types of crimes.

We went to 6 or 7 correctional facilities that semester. Attendance was mandatory. Miss one, and your grade dropped an entire grade point. If you missed two, you could figure on a D, three and you flunked the class, as it was a tough class. It wasn't a big class to begin with, but by the end of the class, out of somewhere between 30-40 students, less than 10 were girls. That was the semester I had to buy 83 books(made a lasting impression in quantity and cost!)... almost all for this class, and a Juvenile Deliquency class, both taught by the same professor. Plus we had additional reading at the library. The good thing was, the topics were fascinating and the prof was excellent.

One thing I learned from that class? We spend way too much money supporting prisoners with life sentences and on death row.

Those on Death Row? they shouldn't get more than 2 appeals, and the first needs to be within 6 months, the second within another 6 months. After that... they are done, and give them a pill, a shot, hang'em high...just get rid of them!!

The US spends a ridiculous amount of money housing prisoners, regardless of their crime. Some live much better in prison than they ever could out of prison!

Death sentence is a Question that drives me nuts.    I do not care if someone  who kidnaps sexually abuses then kills a family members child  has an IQ of 65, was themselves abused at that age or raised in a Cult that encouraged them to do so,
 I would want to be the one to usher them off the planet not the State but the family, me or others to dispatch them.

So when given the death penalty how do we work it, elocution, hanging, gas, beheading ?

We no longer burn at the stake or draw and quarter people, We are civilized today. now we strap down a medicated person on a gurney, use antibiotic swabs to prevent infection and inject them with chemicals.

I am so tired of seeing these monsters that will kidnap, torture, rape and murder children get off for  with an easy death.

On the other hand, life in solitary, no radio, TV, no books, mail, playing cards, no visits from family just a pastor or lawyer once a month.    This may be worse then death, one shower twice a month and that lasts just 30 minutes.   Not seeing the sun or the moon and stars-------doctor or dentist every two months---  For the monsters that made Hell on earth for others, with luck they will live a lot of years going stark raving mad.

Now I have seen documentaries on how woman in prison are treated and I find if they do the same crime as a male they should be treated the same.  Unfortunately they are not in most cases, they drown their kids, cut off limbs and shoot their baby's, yet they are shown wandering about a park like setting hooking up with sex partners.  Their cells are larger with personal TV's computers and all the comforts of home.

Piss me off sometimes to know that sometimes the worse of the worse are not of the male species.
