While some may think all the hippies have burned out or faded away, the truth is they’re still out there, still busily making love, but not war. We here at Estately set out to find communities where they’re heavily concentrated, as well as providing ideal habitat for the next generation of flower children. To determine this we used a formula based on marijuana availability and legality, number of stores selling hemp, local counter-culture icons, tie-dye availability, hippie festivals, progressive government, intensity of Occupy protests, and a Facebook poll. In the end, we determined these places are the 17 Best U.S. Cities for Hippies…

1. Just spent a long weekend in Asheville

Beautiful city and the weather was great. Excellent dining & beer selections.

Asheville was beautiful last time I saw it many years ago. If it becomes a hippy Mecca, though, it will turn to crap.

15. I am sure I'll get grief for this observation

but the pictures in the links, and the areas listed, are mighty white. Seems to be far less racial diversity in the "hippie" designation than in the general population.

Hippydom is an exclusive community these days.

As an alum, i am proud of being from a 'lowly' state school!

Also College of the Redwoods is located there.

As far as the list, I have to agree with the ones I've been to. However I would be concerned living in Asheville, considering the direction the rest of the state has taken. I don't know how Austin has survived, but it is/ has been gentrified to near Oblivion. Same with SF.

Humboldt University. Isn't that where the bug-****ing primitive teaches? Mike something-or-other?

26. When I visited Bisbee, a female artist exclaimed to me "people don't get divorced in Bisbee,
they just take turns" referring to the population density and availability of optional partners. I remember being perplexed for a moment, then amused. It's a cool and fascinating town

Loveless, no romance, faceless partners. This is not freedom. It is not enlightenment. Sad and pathetic.
It is animalistic. The human part has been removed. Without love, what have you gained?

I think drugs were the start of the liberal death spiral we find ourselves in. Drugs have dehumanized everything

Bizbee is a really old and tiny tourist spot.  It's south of Tombstone, not far from the border.  I had fun down there.  Don't remember Hippies and no was involved, but we were doing the saloon crawl.

My wife has a cousin that lives in Canton.  I used to run a delivery route starting in Asheville, heading west to Maggie Valley.  Even seen Popcorn Sutton drive by me in his pickup once!

I can put up with hippies, Manatou Springs is someplace I always go when I am in Colorado Springs.   Jackson Square in NO got me over smelly people

I remember seeing this old man in an older pickup, never knew who he was until about 5 years later, when I watched a special on TV about him.

To the east is woods...with lots of deer and it's anchored by Monroe Reservoir. To the west is 67 with tons of communities that hunt in the woods to the east.

To the north is Martinsville (otherwise known as Bucktown), heck they could burn Bloomington to the ground all by their lonsies.

I lived in Colorado Springs when my husband was stationed at Ft. Carson but never got to know Manitou.  All I remember is that many of the homes had a lot of steps up to them, the rock climbers and the red soil.

I rode over to Bloomington from Camp Atterbury a few years ago. Walked around their hippie district and had dinner at a Tibetan restaurant. It was OK.

The best part of that ride was a place in Nashville, IN with really good pie.

You got out just in time, I'm keeping the 31/65 corridor (Atterbury inclusive) in reserve for the center thrust on IUPUI and the greater Indianapolis area.
