Health-care law is tied to new caps on work hours for part-timers

For Kevin Pace, the president’s health-care law could have meant better health insurance. Instead, it produced a pay cut.

Like many of his colleagues, the adjunct music professor at Northern Virginia Community College had managed to assemble a hefty course load despite his official status as a part-time employee. But his employer, the state, slashed his hours this spring to avoid a Jan. 1 requirement that all full-time workers for large employers be offered health insurance. The law defines “full time” as 30 hours a week or more.

“We work so hard for so little pay,” he said. “You would think they would want to make an investment in society, pay the teachers back and give us health care.”

This month, the Obama administration delayed the employer insurance requirement until January 2015. But Virginia, like some other employers around the country that capped part-timers’ hours in anticipation of the initial deadline, has no plans to abandon its new 29-hour-a-week limit.

2. It's almost unfathomable to imagine how an adjunct professor could possible get 30 hours of teaching done. Plus, I would have thought the school itself would be doling out the hours to the various adjuncts.

And since real full time professors tend to teach maybe 15 hours a week, this simply underscores that not all full time or part time work is the same.

Nonetheless, this simply underscores how far some employers will go to keep from either paying an adequate wage or giving decent benefits.

3. My daughter works in the summer for a Virginia state park.

HER hours weren't cut and she works a 40-hour work week, because as a college student who is 21 years old, she's covered under my husband's health insurance. Other employees, though, had their hours cut so the state didn't have to cover them.

Another daughter works in a marina and the employer there did the same thing. Cut hours for older employees, but kept our daughter at full time because she's 24 and is covered under my husband's health insurance. Isn't it nice that they get to have another company (albeit a multi-billion dollar a year corporation) cover the cost of insuring their workers?

The 24-year-old gave her two-week notice, though, and is leaving. Please think good thoughts for her as she's interviewing Sunday and Monday for a job in her area of expertise - one that will be full-time with full benefits - and NOT barely above the minimum wage she's been working for, with no raise for the past 18 months.

Would it be appropriate to say something like..... you
:ownit:
It's yours, DUmpmonkeys.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Did it ever occur to you, Mr Music Teacher, to maybe go where the jobs are? Music teachers are in demand in rural areas. For that matter teachers period are in demand in rural areas. And just so the dummies know I support having music teachers.

Music is a painting on the canvas of time.

I was in the band in grade/jr/high school. As were my parents. I love music. Some of the best teachers I had were the music teachers in Jr and Sr High School. I took a lot of music classes in college too... just cause I loved it. Couldn't be in the band cause I worked full time.

I have no sympathy for you dummie. None at all.

Last months employment report:

MINUS 220,000+/- FULL TIME jobs
PLUS 380,000+/- PART TIME jobs

Welcome to a fundamentally changed America under the economic genius of 0bama and his merry band of idiots.

Socialism. Never. Works.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.
