In addition, folks.... a Harrier is a BRITISH fighter, not American.
I was stationed on the USS Bataan also a Wasp class LHD, and we had a few harriers. The Navy has tons of them as they are perfect for our platform.
For those who don't know. An LHD does indeed resemble a carrier but it has a few differences. Our flight deck is a rectangle, not offset like a carrier. We carry helicopters, harriers and ospreys as an LHD does not have the launch/arrest systems that a carrier has. The USMC uses them (we carried around 1,500 Marines and their gear) as we can carry their aircraft, trucks and landing craft. We have a well deck that can recover small craft up to and including LCAC's.
