Men held captive in north Houston home for yearsFour men found living in "deplorable conditions" in a Houston garage told police that they were being held captive after being lured by promises of alcohol and cigarettes so that their captor could cash their public-assistance checks, authorities said. A neighbor called 911 at about 8am Friday, fearing there some was something suspicious going on in the home. Police say when they arrived they discovered four men living in some sort of converted garage without beds or even a restroom. One by one, the alleged captives were taken away on stretchers. They're sick, malnourished and confused. Police say they were being held in the home against their will -- possibly for years.
Court records did not list an attorney for Jones. Records showed he previously had been charged with theft, marijuana possession and failing to register as a sex offender.
A fourth man, 54, who told officers he was a military veteran, declined treatment but authorities said he would be cared for at a Veterans Administration hospital. He told reporters Friday that he was living in the house and not the garage, although he said he was sleeping on the floor.Homicide Sgt. Steve Murdock said Saturday in a department statement that the men said Jones "used force and coercion to keep them there for the purpose of monetary gain."Four women were also found living in the house, three of whom appeared to have mental disabilities, police said. Their living conditions were described as more normal.
