Friday, My son and I donated our day
« on: July 14, 2013, 09:10:19 AM »
Friday, My son and I donated our day (over 6 hours) at the local humane society. He chose to do it as a part of his community service for advancement in the scouts. My incentive was their policy that children volunteers under 16 need an adult supervisor. My son got to experience the whole array of caring for animals at the shelter. We walked dogs, cleaned kennels, tended to cats, etc.

I have to give them credit, they do work hard at keeping the place clean--and so do the volunteers. They were happy to get two volunteers for the price of one. It's sad to see so many good animals without a home. Many of the dogs were tickled to death to have some one walk them and give them attention. They had what they called the bark park (100ft by 100ft) that you could take the dogs in, take off the leash, and let them loose. They loved it. One big, mean-looking, large pitbull mix was perfectly happy to just run around a little bit and then he just kept trying walk into the leash around his neck. I think he liked being walked on the leash.

They had a red pitbull that is about 2-3 years old that was an absolute sweetheart. She is just like my niece's red pitbull except about 7-8 years younger. She loved to run and catch Frisbees. If my wife were not so afraid of dogs, I would have taken her home with us.

We were filthy when we got home so my wife made us come in through the back door and go straight the utility/bathroom. Part of this was because we spent some time in the quarantined cat room. They said that we could make our own cat sick and I also didn't want to take any chances with my wife's weakened immunity system having been off of chemo less than one month.

After getting cleaned up, my son went to his martial arts class. I was tired to say the least.

As an aside, my son's scout troop is still together even though its future is undecided. They had already registered for summer camp and will be going there next week. Only the future will tell.

I'm assuming that's for the "Citizenship in the Community" merit badge, one of 3 citizenship merit badges needed for Eagle rank. Tell your son to hang in there and work toward advancement.

Our troop is about 1/2 of what it was.....my son  finally completed all his work for Eagle a few months ago and it will awarded in church August 18. His past scout masters will be there to see it but won't be participating or wearing there uniforms. I hate that, they were the finest men and Scout masters  in the county presiding over the most active troop in the entire council.

Congrats to your son. He worked hard for it.

My son needed 6 hours of community service to finish out advancement to Star Scout (I believe???). At least, that's what he told me. All that I know from the Scoutmaster is that it is his next advancement.

I think that the scoutmaster is going to try to keep the troop together as long as he can. He is try8ng to find another sponsor. The Church hasn't kicked them out yet. They have been patient even though they are dropping their sponsorship.

I think membership/charters are paid up through December every year. So, they are members in good standing of the Boy Scouts until Jan 1, 2014. I am sure that if the troops disbanded today the Boy Scouts would still count them as members as long as they can if for no other reason than to say, "Hey, look, our decision didn't do any damage after all."

That's great that you did that, CL.  I was a regular volunteer at the Danbury shelter in CT.  A large part of the job is the cleaning & washing.  Everything needs to be wiped with bleach, to avoid spreading disease.  We had enough volunteers that all the dogs got a walk + some play time every day.

I live close to a no kill shelter that started out as being a rescue for pets of deceased owners. I've stopped in a couple times, they have a thrift shop. I've taken food, sent paypal donations, etc.

I can no longer even drive by the place, it makes me want to take a dog home and I am not home enough for an inside pet. They end up with some really nice dogs.

I'm happy to hear that you and your son were able to do something so worthwhile together! It sounds like a very rewarding day for all involved, including the animals.  :cheersmate:
