As if more evidence were needed about the tragedy of black education, Rachel Jeantel, a witness for the prosecution in the George Zimmerman murder trial, put a face on it for the nation to see. Some of that evidence unfolded when Zimmerman’s defense attorney asked 19-year-old Jeantel to read a letter that she allegedly had written to Trayvon Martin’s mother. She responded that she doesn’t read cursive, and that’s in addition to her poor grammar, syntax and communication skills.

Jeantel is a senior at Miami Norland Senior High School. How in the world did she manage to become a 12th-grader without being able to read cursive writing? That’s a skill one would expect from a fourth-grader. Jeantel is by no means an exception at her school. Here are a few achievement scores from her school: Thirty-nine percent of the students score basic for reading, and 38 percent score below basic. In math, 37 percent score basic, and 50 percent score below basic. Below basic is the score when a student is unable to demonstrate even partial mastery of knowledge and skills fundamental for proficient work at his grade level. Basic indicates only partial mastery.

I hope Rachel Jeantel’s court performance is a wake-up call for black Americans about the devastation wrought by our educational system.

The liberal response: Throw more money at it...

The Conservative response:  Fire bad teachers, trim down the administration, get the feds out of the schools, return to basics, stop all the classes that have nothing to do with reading writing (even cursive) math and science and english....Get rid of all the social garbage they push in the school...ghey rights, abortion, free sex aids and free drug needles. Just a few of the things I personally would like to see being done.

One of the liberal responses that I have noted: Cursive?!? what's that...who even uses that archaic form of writing any more?

I think that it runs deeper that her professed inability to read cursive. I suspect she has little reading comprehension skills period. Why didn't she write the note herself in long hand? I am speculating but I don't believe she can read or write or at best can only do it enough to text.

I suspect your right and if even if half right isn't a damning thing?

My 15 year old grand daughter does. And when done properly it is very visually aesthetic. Some people have very beautiful handwriting and then there are those that write like doctors.....

A lot of schools have stopped teaching it.  Why I don't know, it takes me forever to print vs cursive.

Cursive was the basis for shorthand. I'll bet that long since hasn't been taught.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Probably not.  I used to transcribe from a recorded tape.

That's actually impressive.

In one of my college history classes I had the chance to read an actual letter that had been sent home from a Civil War Soldier,  The writing was absolutely gorgeous, despite a number of spelling errors.

I personally take pride in my handwriting.  It isn't to level of previous generations, but it is nice, neat, and legible.

When I write to my girlfriend I use cursive. When I write notes I use shorthand.

Some of those Civil War letters can blow sand in your eyes.

If her dumbass edumacation is a tragedy, it is a self imposed tragedy. Vote dimbos and dumbed down education is the result.

My handwriting sucks. Always has, but it's worse now. My dad's handwriting, in cursive, was beautiful.
