Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are bolstering plant life throughout the world, environmental scientists report in a newly published peer-reviewed study. The findings, published in Geophysical Research Letters, are gleaned from satellite measurements of global plant life, and contradict assertions by activists that global warming is causing deserts to expand, along with devastating droughts.

A team of scientists led by environmental physicist Randall Donohue, a research scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia, analyzed satellite data from 1982 through 2010. The scientists documented a carbon dioxide “fertilization effect” that has caused a gradual greening of the Earth, and particularly the Earth’s arid regions, since 1982. The satellite data showed rising carbon dioxide levels caused a remarkable 11 percent increase in foliage in arid regions since 1982, versus what would be the case if atmospheric carbon dioxide levels had remained at 1982 levels.

“Lots of papers have shown an average increase in vegetation across the globe, and there is a lot of speculation about what’s causing that,” said Donohue in a press release accompanying the study. “Up until this point, they’ve linked the greening to fairly obvious climatic variables, such as a rise in temperature where it is normally cold or a rise in rainfall where it is normally dry. Lots of those papers speculated about the CO2 effect, but it has been very difficult to prove.”

The study noted that foliage in warm, wet regions such as tropical rainforests are near their maximum capacity. In warm, arid regions there is room for greater increases in foliage and rising carbon dioxide levels are inducing more prevalent plant growth.

The two main reasons are that 1) The amount of CO2 being absorbed by the plants is a small fraction of what we are creating by burning fossil fuels and 2) Plants are just a temporary "carbon sink" where the CO2 is held for a limited period of time, once the plant dies and decays the CO2 is once again released into the atmosphere.

I don't doubt that there is a greening effect but that doesn't change the fact that the ice caps are melting and the ocean waters are warming.

That's right folks when plants die they pollute the air. So would that mean that if we have less vegetation we would have less CO2?

Human activity only accounts for a very small amount of the total CO2 released over any given year.  The Earth releases far more.  They discovered methane plumes over jungles being caused by rotting material that they didn't even know about.  Yet, our tiny release is somehow going to send the environment into a tail spin.

I'm all for conservation and good science.  Global warming is a bunk theory based on bad science.

This can't be true.  When I was growing up they told me we were destroying the rainforests.  If we haven't killed all of them by now then I guess we need to step it up a bit.

As to the other DUmmie who is claiming the plants are dying and killing other plants; if that is true then there would be no hope for the planet, right?  I mean you would never be able to stop the CO2 levels from rising ...

I told my DUmbass cousin (I still haven't figured out what his DUmp nickname is) globull warming was a hoax, he went ALL TO HELL, claiming he knew otherwise because he had a degree in teaching science, and I was an idiot.

I told him CO2 was NOT a pollutant, it was PLANT FOOD.  Prove me wrong.

Global warming is not a "theory." It is an intentional lie that is not based on anything resembling science, bad or good, but is a falsehood meant to advance an anti-capitalist agenda. I realize that everyone here thinks the same, but I'm trying to frame the answer in its correct form.
