A one-two punch for labor: 1) Raise the minimum wage and 2) Establish a minimum guaranteed income

I think there's a growing realization that raising the minimum wage alone isn't going to solve the growing cheap-labor/working-poor/poverty problem. While the big mega-corporations could certainly afford to cough up a few more dollars per hour for their workers, there are too many struggling small businesses out there who simply cannot afford to pay anyone more than say $12 an hour. So we end up with the unprecedented situation of an economy that seemingly is fully functional, but that doesn't provide enough jobs to go around. That's why we also need to establish a guaranteed minimum income for those who can't find work - something that will keep them out of poverty - probably on the order of a couple hundred dollars a week. Given the millions of people out there looking for work, there still would be many people willing to work for the new minimum wage, so small businesses need not worry. Actually, providing everyone with a basic level of income ought to be a welcome boost to the economy.

Sorry my thoughts are not that well organized, but surprise, surprise I don't have the time - I have to go to work.

Aww poor DUmmy has to work. The oppression he must feel.  :mental:

This is a wonderful idea, let's hike the minimum wage so on top of the 0bamacare fees businesses will be hemorrhaging even more money, then let's top that off by even more government spending for people to sit on their asses. What could go wrong?  :whatever:

2. Just raise the minimum wage to $10.25 and ALL BUSINESSES will be able to afford it.

Even struggling small businesses.

What makes raising the minimum wage so great is that every business will see improved profits. Mainly because every employee that makes minimum wage will get a pay increase. And, of course, all of that new income will be spent at some other business.

Minimum guaranteed income we already have, and passing a new bill would never fly anyways.

 :rotf:

They really are clueless, they can't understand when businesses have to pay more money they end up having to either fire people or raise prices. So what will happen is that $10.25 will only go as far as $8 goes now.
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

If raising the minimum wage is so great, why not raise it to $500 an hour?

Business 101 raising expenses is GOOD for your bottom line.

The real reason the democrat party so wants the minimum wage hiked? Most union contracts are linked to the minimum wage for their labor wages. Gives more money to the unions which means more money to the evil democrat party.

This is a terrific idea!

As Bela Pelosi has taught us, every dollar invested in welfare generates eight or nine dollars in economic activity.

Giving a deadbeat two hundred bucks a week generates as much prosperity as a company hiring an engineer for $7K a month.

And it's more socially responsible, since engineers are wealthy and deadbeats are poor.

Good point, but why stop there ? Upthread SSB said it should be 1 million dollars. Libs, no matter how hard they try cannot undo the basic laws of economics.

A minimum wage increase doesn't stop at minimum wage earners.  Raise it to $12 and now those who were making decent money at $12 an hour are making minimum wage and will push for a raise.  Many union jobs are based on the minimum wage, i.e., their salary is a set percentage of the minimum wage, so there is another salary increase for companies to deal with.  To pay for this across the board salary increase, companies will have to increase the price of their products, eventually canceling out whatever financial benefits minimum wage earners saw.

That the government constantly redefines upward to perpetuate the problem and keep the idiot masses, the faux victimized and the professionally petulant, upset.  Exacerbated, of course, by your ridiculous quest to add 11 + million undocumented (D)emocrats to the cheap labor force and a Marxist war on the  US economy by regulatory assault.  But, do go on.....

^Good article, but it didn't cover the subject I thought it would. I would love to hear a discussion of how he evolved away from trotskyism. Not unlike the David Horowitz story.

Where's Margaret Sanger when you need her.

She had a lot in common with George Bernard Shaw, often referred to by GlennBeck. He was an avid and even rabid socialist who believed that about half the human race would need reeducation once the socialist revolution occurred. Of that he thought about half would prove to be uneducable and he proposed that they be discarded.
I was more than a little disappointed to learn that not only was Shaw a socialist, to was HG Wells and Orwell. I enjoyed those 3 authors very much and such intelligence would seem to be incompatible with socialism.

How about we just legislate that some businesses have to pay more because the city council is in the pockets of the unions?

D.C. lawmakers gave final approval Wednesday to a bill requiring some large retailers to pay their employees a 50 percent premium over the city’s minimum wage, a day after Wal-Mart warned that the law would jeopardize its plans in the city.

The retail giant had linked the future of at least three planned stores in the District to the proposal. But its ultimatum did not change any legislators’ minds. The 8 to 5 roll call matched the outcome of an earlier vote on the matter, taken before Wal-Mart’s warning.

Are you implying that politicians deliberately stoke inflation when playing the other people's money giveaway vote buying game ?
