July 5, 2013 (San Diego)—Several hundred people from across San Diego County, including East County residents, held a rally and march through Balboa Park to the National Security Agency (NSA) surveillance of Americans’ phone and internet records.

What compelled San Diegans to protest in the park on July 4, rather than going to a picnic or barbecue? The activists are calling for restoration of Fourth Amendment rights to freedom from unreasonable search and seizure—rights born out of our founding fathers' struggle to win independence against tyranny.

Kevin Hall, one of the organizers, told the crowd that “237 years ago the founding fathers were signing the Declaration of Independence.” They opposed a king that ignored the will of the citizens. Nor did they hide while the British violated their rights, he noted. In fact, they knew “that all men are created equal.” They also observed that “history is created by those who show up.”

One photo showed maybe a hundred hippies.  In an area of perhaps several million, only a hundred show up.
