Gohmert: Cutting food stamps not evil because poor people buy king crab legs

Well, Michele Bachmann and Reagan's Welfare Queen still live on:

Representative Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Thursday denied it was “evil” for Republicans to want to cut food stamps because poor people used the program to purchase extravagant foods.

The Texas congressman complained that Democrats had portrayed Republicans as evil because they supported a measure to cut nearly 2 million low-income people off the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which would mainly impact working families with children.

On the other hand, Gohmert said, poor people were using food stamps to buy food that other Americans could not afford. He claimed his “broken-hearted” constituents had repeatedly told him they had seen people use food stamps to buy king crab legs.

“Because he does pay income tax, he doesn’t get more back than he pays in, he is actually helping pay for king crab legs when he can’t pay for them for himself,” Gohmert explained.

Ok, who wants to burn a mole?

16. Here is how it can happen

For most of a year, a long time ago, I was unemployed and living on unemployment and food stamps. I got my ration of food stamps once a month like clockwork.

You would work hard to feed yourself as cheaply as possible, because if you didn't the money ran out pretty fast. Occasionally because of an unexpected deal or two (10lb bag of potatos for less than $1.00, and such..) you ended up at the end of the month with $5 or $10 left over. So, on the last day of the month, the day before you got the new stamps, you could go out and buy some fancy protein. I personally preferred the bacon wrapped filets at the local meat market, if they were on sale.

Most of the month was bagged bean soup with the cheapest protein, and a few veggies from the farmers market or homegrown. But if you were careful and lucky, once a month you could put a really nice dinner on the table.

This thread is just making me angry.  I imagine it's going to get larger with more tales (tails) of woe from the DUmmies who've 'been there'.

yeah, you may get the occasional person who takes advantage of the program- not as many as say slimeball repukes who take advantage of tax loopholes and farm subsidies, but a few.

I am on food stamps. I'm disabled. I get all of 113 bucks a month. King Crab legs? Lobster? Really? I eat black beans and rice, bananas, pasta, whatever veggies are on sale. chicken or fish approx once a week.

I'm sick unto death of the pigs like Goehmert. And people like YOU. He can go **** himself with a rusty jagged farm implement. You? use your imagination.

 

So she's admitting, slyly, that it is the republicans who actually earn the money thereby being able to take advantage of some legal loopholes the IRS leaves for us.  Crumbs are all they are in reality but every little bit helps.

This DUmmie is almost there but fails to realize a couple of fundamental differences here.

It is NOT THEIR money.  It is OUR money but we're allowing them to make choices.  A lot of them are making poor choices.

Secondly, I do not care what poor people buy.  If they are spending their money they can purchase whatever they want BUT if you are using food stamps at ALL then your money is no longer your money it is OUR money.

If you pull up in a Lexus, as is mentioned in the thread, then you have no right to our money.  Sell that car and get something cheaper until you are no longer living off MY money.

I would propose a special section of grocery stores be set aside with only the things you may buy if you're using food stamps.  Milk, eggs, cheese, beans, rice, bread, etc ... You know, staples.

I witnessed first hand at Bass Pro Shops a person buying a Daiwa spinning reel and a Moultrie game cam with an EBT card.  Massachusetts where at least one welfare Queen is related to the current occupier of the White house.

Another thing, if a person is on all the government programs they live as well as someone making $43,000. They pay no taxes it is all gravy. Our gravy that we work for and then have forcibly removed from our wallets.

You've pointed out what the low information voter and dumbasses want: a life free of paying do necessities in favor of one where all income is discretionary. I think part of the reason they wish for it is most are unemployed for some reason or another and bored out of their gourd with no finds to really enjoy all that extra time. Apparently they still have not learned the lesson that everybody gives up something to live the life they want. If its total freedom from responsibility then expect to be short on cash. If its pretty things then expect to have less time I enjoy them so you can provide the resources for them.

I think welfare and snap goes on the same card. If someone gets a cash benefit then they are on welfare too. O course who knows in more liberal areas. Im in the Midwest and snap can not be used as cash. It's strictly for food unless you also receive welfare benefits.

That and I've been on. The receiving end of charity. I just can't fathom spending that help like it was some bonus. If anything you would think you would try to conserve it so there are no gaps during harder months and one can have a regular budget without worries for a few months rather then 2 months of partying hard. I just don't get that mindset bit it doesn't surprise me considering how some folks blow things like eitc an any other Tax refund. Some people get money in their pocket and they just have to burn it and hey are no better off then before the help. And that behavior is coddled. It's insane.

I worked with some young kids a couple years ago that used to get it (well, their mothers anyway).  They said it was some of the best cheese they've ever eaten.

Not sure about the peanut butter, but bad PB is still good.

Two days ago I watched a woman using WIC to buy infant formula. Not bad you say? How about the most expensive brand in the store. Four cans added up to over $75. My wife and I NEVER spent that much when our daughter was an infant. We went to Wally World and got the stuff that was around half that or less.

Oh shit, I forgot, we didn't use WIC/Food Stamps, we used our own money.    


One other thing, she then proceeded to got out to her nice, new, Toyota Camry, you know, the kind of car I can't afford? Nice, huh.

I can't say that abuse. That crap has gotten expensive since we used it. What we paid 12 bucks for 10 years ago looks to be about double that now. Plus you sometimes for a kid that does better on one brand or the other. I could only use a name brand for about the first 7 months. Once my kids gt use to solids they were able to have more variety. But yeah we paid for it all on our dime.

you can't own a car worth more than 2 or 3 grand and receive food stamps

that being said there is some fraud and abuse(like a boyfriend provides income that is not claimed) but i do not want to starve our children over a few adults bad choices

i am just glad the house version did NOT pass,20 billion in cuts is stupid when for every dollar of food stamps spent we get $1.79 in GDP...so by cutting food stamps the repubs were actually hurting econmic growth

I still don't understand that statement.  Can someone help me out?  If that's true wouldn't it be better if we were ALL on food stamps?  We could wipe out the debt in no time!

Just because folks are poor & on assistance, they should only be able to eat baloney sandwiches & generic mac n' cheese??

We can't legislate HOW people spend their 'money' - if that were the case, think of what we could tell corporations to do with all of the tax incentives and welfare benefits THEY get.

It is NOT their money, what part of that is so hard for these people to understand??
