I think it's different now.
Before term limits, ol' Ernie cowed other long-time state senators all the time.
But then term limits happened, and all the old-timers, including ol' Ernie himself, had to leave the state legislature, being replaced by crowds of newbies.
With our term limits, one can run a third time after sitting out a term, which ol' Ernie did.
When he came back, none of the newbies knew who the Hell he was, and so don't seem to have been intimidated by him; to them, he's just another state senator, nothing special about him.
I think ol' Ernie doesn't have that old magic any more.
