Americans Are Outraged Because in Voting for Obama, They Thought They Were Rejecting Bush

In 2008, Americans voted for Obama for two primary reasons: 1) to embrace his health care and economic stances in the wake of the financial collapse, and 2) to reject President Bush's hawkish national security and foreign policies.

Of those who voted for Obama, 87 percent strongly disapproved of the war in Iraq, 90 percent claimed McCain would continue Bush's policies, and only 13 percent found the War on Terror to be the election's most important issue (compared with an incredible 86 percent for those who voted for McCain).

Meaning: the greatest divide between voters was the issue of terrorism and how our country was addressing it, both domestically and abroad.

Meaning: many Americans who voted for Obama were reacting in various forms to the war in Iraq, The Patriot Act, and a myriad of perceived constitutional abuses in the name of fighting terror.

7. I think it's even worse for my generation

Obama was the first President we voted for in 2008 and it wasn't about voting against Bush. He really gave us hope for a new way forward and a new type of politics. He talked about valuing education and human rights (health care for all being a human right). He talked about ending the wars and bringing our troops home and closing Guantanamo Bay. His subsequent presidency has crushed much of that hope and instead given us a healthy dose of reality and pessimism that our parents already possessed. I know many people my age who didn't even vote in 2012 because they were so disgruntled. Young people who are outraged are so because they thought in voting for Obama they were voting for campaign trail 2008 Obama. Turns out we weren't.

29. I never said "all young people" or "most young people" even

I'm talking about in my experience as a young person who speaks with other young people about Obama and our disappointment with him. I'm not a pollster, and I'm not a reporter telling you facts. I'm telling you the sentiment that I and others that I know feel. Last I checked this is an online discussion forum for ****'s sake.. not a formal forum or panel. Seeing several of your responses here gives the impression that you need to chill the **** out.

Personally I couldn't care less what the polling says or what polling among "democrats" says. I don't know many young people who identify as democrats anymore, and I'm talking about very liberal young people. Hell, I shy away from the term for myself as the party is more center-right than my personal beliefs.

12. it's funny how this news comes out

And suddenly people are outraged. Meanwhile Obama has been letting us down, with both foreign and domestic policies, for quite a while.

Aw, poor lil Ava.

Ava--you don't know one-tenth of what you THINK you know.  And your ability to translate that (lack of) knowledge into anything useful is pretty much worthless.

Uh, I'm sure lil Ava knows that if anything more leftist were installed here, instead of running around on mommy's money taking pictures, she'd be one of those bent-backed women with a short-handled broom sweeping the streets, for pennies a day, like what happens in socialist paradises.

I'm sure Ms Lil Porkette knows that.

You'd think so, but unfortunately not.  Lil Ava isn't particularly worldly.  She is probably completely unaware that Cuba is reputed to have the best educated hookers on the planet.

That's the problem with the little 'tards.  They KNOW every other generation has screwed up.  They're simply convinced they've learned all there is to know and that they'll be the first ones to get it right.

I think one could say that about just every young generation, Sparky. Not defending the rotund dummie, mind you, but her attitude is hardly new.

I remember reading an article years ago (circa mid 1980's) in readers digest. It was about the younger generations music. It was a scathing put down about the younger generations degenerate music. It wasn't until the end of the article that the author said he had quoted almost verbatim an article that was written in.... 1845.

Now back to the current younger generation. I have witnessed, personally, some of the attitudes of the younger generation and it disgusts me. A couple of summers ago I was off on assignment and out of the office for several months... from mid March until 4th week of July. Well good ole Perky comes strolling in the office around the last week of June to sign some things and finds several kids, summer interns, sitting at their desk texting and such. The one that set me off was this boy, around 21, sitting there, in the cubicle outside my office no less, in shorts, a tee shirt, with his damned feet on the desk. So I went over there, asked him nicely if he was comfy, and he said something about the chair was too hard or something and could he get another one?

I went ballistic and he had the nerve to look surprised.

I have had phone interviews where I called the person's number at a certain time, they knew I was calling, and they answered "What up?".

I have had people that answered their cell phone in the middle of an interview and had a 5 minute conversation about an upcoming concert or cookout.

That is the younger generation of today.

I'm just shocked to read the chinless li'l 'Bama butterball using the word "****".

She has apparently embraced the "culture" of New York City.

With her film degree, she's probably making big money in the industry.

According to Rule 34, there should be no shortage of opportunities in film for fat little girls with no chin and a southern accent.

Ava is only a few years younger than I am, and I find it hilarious that she complaining about how hard our generation has it.  To many people in their 20's believe that you have the right to "follow your dreams" and have it pay for everything you want and need.  They have spent so much time being told how wonderful they are that they don't think they should have to start at the bottom.

People complain about how hard it is to get jobs, but many young people aren't willing to move to where the jobs are.  Quite simply, if you are single, what is keeping you from moving to get an awesome job?  I applied to nursing jobs all over the county.  I was perfectly willing to move to North Dakota or Alaska if my other job prospects didn't work out. People who are married and who have children or other family commitments don't have that sort of freedom.

If you still can't find a job, find a CNA program.  6-12 weeks of schooling and you will almost certainly be able to find a job at a nursing home.  Sure it is a difficult, dirty job at times, and you may have to work nights, but it is better than sitting on your couch complaining about not being able to find work.  It will give you a paycheck while you work towards something better.

Sometimes being an adult means that you work on your passion in your spare time.  You write, create videos, compose music on your off time, and you work so that you don't starve.

Imagine that you had a company that was still making money without government intervention. A company that through clever and well planned  actions made it through the perilous times that the democrat party has brought about. Would you give 18 year oldes an equal vote in that company,s leadership?

Hell no! You would be asking for certain financial ruin. Young people really think that they are smart and so easily fooled.

This is why voting should be at 26, like for health care. I would put it at property owners and people that actually pay income taxes.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Well said.

Most generations have faced hard times and that was before the magical 99 weeks of unemployment.

When I was younger and would get laid off, I did not waste any time looking for a job and accepting any offer presented to me.

Poor Ava....

I guess she discovered she isn't the next Martin Scorsese, and a film about the life of a town dog isn't the new Taxi Driver.

Quite the kerfunkle. - all that college money spent, and she has bukus to show for it.

Its not like we haven't warned her for years that unless she starts directing porn, she has little chance at a career in her chosen profession. Your 15 minutes are up, it seems even DU has turned on you. Hopefully you salvage your life by following Celtic Rose's advice, and find a career that will get you paid, and continue working on your arts as a hobby. Maybe you will be 'discovered' and have a shot. But if you aren't, at least you will still have a productive life with enough income to be able to support yourself and your hobby.

Unlike what Nancy Pelsoi promised, Obama isn't going to pay you to continue to 'follow your dreams'. Sorry.

Exactly - I didn't decide when growing up that I wanted to be a mailman. My wife didn't decide she wanted to work for the local energy monopoly. But we make enough money to support our home, our kids, and have enough left over to support our dreams.
