Question: Where is the outrage?

Cedar Rapids Iowa is presently in the throes of a "500 year" flood event.  Substantial portions of the city are under water.  the levees on the Cedar river have been breached, and a substantial percentage of the population has been evacuated.  The city is now essentially "cut off" from outside services via the highways, yet.....I hear no outrage in the media......

There is no "wall to wall" coverage of the plight of the poor citizens of Cedar Rapids.....

Shephard Smith is not broadcasting from the top of a flooded overpass in town......

There are no photos of hundreds of unused school buses sitting in a flooded yard......

There is no strident outcry for FEMA, and president Bush to drop everything and come to the rescue......

There are no disturbing photos of thousands of refugees holed up in a stadium, defecating in the hallways.....

There are no indications of rioting, looting, and roving bands of criminals......

The police and emergency crews have not deserted their posts and disappeared to parts unknown.....

The Mayor is not appealing for help from a plush hotel suite in a town 60 miles away......

The governor is not blaming the federal government for allowing this event to happen.......

The Red Cross is not being held up by state officials from providing disaster aid......

The National Guard (to my knowledge) has not been called out to quell the violence.....


What the hell is happening here!!!

What is the difference between Cedar Rapids, and the lovely town of New Orleans??

What has changed since Katrina hit??

I think this should be a thought-provoking topic........

Great point! Hmmm.....

Must be the same phenomenon that prevented comprehensive coverage of the Katrina destruction everywhere else besides NOLA.

As of the census of 2000,In Cedar Rapids there were 120,758 people, 49,820 households, and 30,838 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,912.6 people per square mile . There were 52,240 housing units at an average density of 827/sq mi . The racial makeup of the city was 91.86% White, 3.71% African American, 0.25% Native American, 1.77% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.71% of the population.

It's not a secret. Biloxi, Waveland, Gulfport, and other Mississippi towns received VERY little coverage. One main difference, Mississippi's governor Haley Barbour actually had more than an ounce of common sense and knew how to be a leader. Oh, and he has a big R to the right of his name.

It's not a secret. Biloxi, Waveland, Gulfport, and other Mississippi towns received VERY little coverage. One main difference, Mississippi's governor Haley Barbour actually had more than an ounce of common sense and knew how to be a leader. Oh, and he has a big R to the right of his name.

I guess I forgot the "sarcasm" indicator......however, Iowa is a pretty "blue" state, and the governor is a Dem......there should be an agenda here......

The news reports are showing people coming together to help each other and authorities doing what needs to be done. What a stark difference to Katrina....

As a midwesterner, I am aware of that.....but the MSM doesn't know that.......

Perhaps since Cedar Rapids is only a third the population of NOLA it doesn't warrant Shepherd Smith, but shouldn't there at least be a Fox blonde bimbo on an overpass somewhere?

Somewhat reminiscent of the flood up north of the Red River in 1997. One of the worst floods in I can't recall how long. There was more news coverage a decade later than at the time.

but but but, it's not just Cedar Rapids. It almost the entire state of Iowa

Iowa Gov. Chet Culver declared 83 of the state's 99 counties state disaster areas. Nine rivers are at or above historic flood levels. Amtrak's California Zephyr line was suspended across Iowa because of flooding along the BNSF Railway.

I think all the media attention on New Orleans actually hampered the recovery effort. Mississippi, Slidell, and St Bernard Parish were hard hit by Hurricane Katrina, yet they are pressing on and rebuilding. No bickering and such in New Orleans.

I am in contact with an internet friend who lives in Cedar Falls Iowa, she says the Nation does not realize the extent of what is going on up there. No one to help them, she says the stench is horrible. Now, where is President Bush? McCain? Obama? What the heck is wrong with our country that we cannot help one another?

We had a huge ice storm hit out area in December of 2006.  I live in central Illinois.  My yard alone had tree limbs covering the entire two lots.  We had branches sticking out the top of our roof.  We could not get out our back door because we had too many limbs to crawl over.  We had to have my father come over and move the limbs before we could come outside to inspect the damage.  We had a power line lying on the ground right on the other side of our deck.

Did anyone show up to help us?  Nope.  So we cleaned it up ourselves.  It's the way we do things here in the Midwest; we don't whine to others and sit here waiting for help to arrive.

I do agree, however, that SOMEONE should be helping these people.

I am always amazed at people who build on flood plains without proper insurance. Honestly, people have to stop relying on the state to bail them out.

I'm sure disadter relief (red corss, etc) are there helping,  or will be as soon as it's safe to be there.  People who chose to not leave their homes and are now stranded?  Eh, not so much sympathy there.

The people who expect the gov't to rebuild for them should be smacked upside the head.

Yes.......where was all the coverage of the rebuilding efforts and emergency help after the floods from Hurricane Floyd in Eastern NC?? Flooding that was considered a 100 or 500 year events. People not even in a flood plain all of a sudden found themselves in a flood.................not more than a little peep in the news media. Same was true of Hugo, Isabelle, Fran, Bertha, Bonnie, Alex, Dennis, Ophellia....etc

Was it because the people of NC (other than John Edwards :bird:) are much more self reliant??

Thank god that Katrina just skirted New Orleans and didn't hit it.

Well I sure hope those in Iowa the best

President Bush is our President.  He is not the Wizard of Oz.  He is not "our leader".  That kind of thinking is what draws people into asking questions like "Where's President Bush?  Where's McCain and Obama?"  The bastardization of our representative republic has been fed and enabled with this ridiculous belief that all things great and small radiate from Washington.

Only silly liberals and little children sit and whine like helpless creatures while waiting to be saved from the adversities of life.   Real Americans pull together on a local level to help themselves, neighbor with neighbor, community with community, county with county, state with state.

I am not buying that. Not now. Our country is in a crisis and Iowa is going to intensify that crisis. Economic. Not to mention they are human beings almost a whole state full of them. The USA sends aid by the mega tons all round the world. President Bush is responsible for leadership in the USA. I can truly understand their frustration. However, what Undies is saying is very crucial to the understanding of the proper role of government. The US government has grown into areas it has no business being involved in, leading to the unwitting enslavement of the US people.
