FEMA uses 'Waffle House index' to take stock of Oklahoma tornado disaster

Craig Fugate, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, came up with the idea of the "Waffle House index" as an informal way of measuring the impact of a disaster. The chain, which has a large number of branches in tornado-prone areas, has a robust emergency management plan.

The index has three levels. If the local Waffle House is up and running, serving a full menu, a disaster is classed as green. If it is running with an emergency generator and serving only a limited menu, it is a yellow. If it is closed, badly damaged or totally destroyed, as during hurricane Katrina, it is a red.

There is only one Waffle House in Moore, the suburb worst hit by the tornadoes. The restaurant, located at 316 SW 19th Street and which normally offers a southern-tinged menu that includes grits, hash browns, and sausage and egg biscuits as well as hamburgers, was closed on Tuesday.

But the Moore tornado was classed as a yellow on the Waffle House index because managers were hoping to get it up and running soon. "It is a yellow because we are hoping to get a generator," said Kelly Thrasher, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based restaurant chain. "Once we have the generator, we will be able to serve a limited menu, maybe a full one."

I found this article (or one very similar) after sandy hit. I happened to work at WH then, so I printed it out and took it to work. My boss was in Mississippi during Katrina, and he told me stories about the WH being the only place open. They even sent a catering RV down there to help out. Pretty cool stories from someone who was there.

  • Not right, but not left, either.

Asshats.

Exactly what I was thinking.

The only thing this tells me is that the government is inefficient at responding to disasters, and a private company who specializes in selling food, not responding to disasters, can do a better job.

Dixierose, don't you work at a Waffle House down there where you are at?  I always frequent the Waffle Houses further south.  They are always clean and very friendly.  You don't go to the ones around here, unless you want Hepatitis A.

I worked at one here for about a year. I got a new job in March...which I LOVE btw.

I guess if it's a one horse town with a "Huddle House" but no "Waffle House" that means it's conservative and needs no help from the government...right?

My hometown back in Georgia has both a Waffle House and a Huddle House, and both were big deals when they opened up.

There's a Huddle House around here, but I've never been to it.

I might have to pay them a visit if they're open this weekend.

I love Huddle House.  None around here, but I have a Waffle House right around the corner.  Cheesy scrambled eggs, grits, and raisin bread.

I checked Google... that HH seems to have disappeared.  It was in an old building on the west side of town.
