My Wife
« on: May 21, 2013, 08:37:18 AM »
My wife officially retired yesterday. We talked about things, and she just cannot cope with the new EPIC computer system, which will be implemented nationwide thanks to Der Führer. She was only working a day or two a week anyway, and there is just no way to learn the ERPIC system on a part-time basis.

Someone at EPIC made MILLIONS of dollars with this crap. A doctor we know said EPIC is always hiring computer people and pays them very high wages (starting at about $60K/year). But the typical employee gets burned out and leaves the company after about 2 years, with all the pressure and travel involved.

Besides, we decided to NOT be bogged down with her part-time schedule; we're just getting too old for that crap, and we want to go places when we want to go to them.

And Schnitzel gets the stitches from the surgery removed today.

My hospital is switching to EPIC in August.  There is definitely a lot of concern among the nurses.

Congratulations to your wife on her retirement  :cheers mate:

Thank you, CR. FWIW, no one at the hospital likes EPIC. It was dumped on everyone with no real training. Be careful, and good luck with it.

She was an ICU/CCU nurse with about 30 years of service. Enough is enough. And the hospital's already lost 6 ICU/CCU nurses because of EPIC. I have no idea about the other floors.

Ask her if she has any advice for a new ICU nurse  :-)

I'm hoping that I'll be new enough when it is started that I won't have too much of an adjustment.

I'll ask, but she thinks the new nurses won't have too much trouble with it since they haven't learned any other systems and will starting with EPIC.

Being she is a nurse, she can always go back to work in some capacity, if she wants to.

Hi CR, this is old coastie's wife...the nurse.  As far as Epic is concerned you should do ok because you will not have anything to compare it to.  I have had every kind of charting you could think of, we had a computer system "charting by exception" for many years that we loved.  Epic takes a lot of training and when you go live your trainers stay with you, ours are into their 2nd week.  We have seen nurses exacerbated and in tears, others no problem.  It was hard for me to resign, but right now I'm just available and it is to stressful with patients' charts and HIPPA to not know the system perfectly.

Good Luck on your nursing career, you have had years of hard work behind you and now you can get your certifications  and become whatever you want to be.  I loved trauma more than any other facet of nursing. Do not let anyone turn you negative......they say we eat our young.  Good Luck and thank you for choosing nursing.

Congrats on the retirement Mrs. CG!!!

After 30+ years of taking care of people at their lowest point in health, you definitely have a place in heaven. God Bless and enjoy retirement!

Ditto!

What kind of award is Jeff gonna give you? You've put up with his shenanigans probably much longer than you've been a nurse!   :-)

ICU really gets into the blood of people that work at it.     Never a dull moment and lots of drama and quick thinking, and the new gadgets to learn and perhaps record on---amazing.

Talk about stress and heart break, then the cheers when a patient is saved.   The lows when a patient dies.

Darn CG your wife must have a backbone of steel to have been in this business for all these years. You are so lucky to have a wife that has saved the lives  of thousands in her  time.

Well, my doctor's appointment went pretty well this morning. I've lost 5 pounds in three months, blood pressure is 110/70.

Next appointment on 8/30 at 0830, unless something really bad shows up on my blood work.

So in this month I had an ophthalmologist appointment and got new glasses, had a podiatrist appoint to have nails cut (Medicare pays for that since I have diabetes), a dental exam that turned out fine, and today's appointment, which also was apparently fine.  :yahoo:

I need to keep losing weight, but not this morning, thank you. My wife and I met at a restaurant for breakfast after the doctor's appointment. The Swedish pancakes with lingonberries was delicious!

They are the little pancake-y things in the shape of a golfball, covered in powdered sugar and you split them open and put butter and jam in them...then pop the whole thing into your mouth!
