AP Exclusive: IRS knew tea party targeted in 2011
WASHINGTON (AP) - Senior Internal Revenue Service officials knew agents were targeting tea party groups as early as 2011, according to a draft of an inspector general's report obtained by The Associated Press that seemingly contradicts public statements by the IRS commissioner.

The IRS apologized Friday for what it acknowledged was "inappropriate" targeting of conservative political groups during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status. The agency blamed low-level employees, saying no high-level officials were aware.

But on June 29, 2011, Lois G. Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt organizations, learned at a meeting that groups were being targeted, according to the watchdog's report. At the meeting, she was told that groups with "Tea Party," ''Patriot" or "9/12 Project" in their names were being flagged for additional and often burdensome scrutiny, the report says.

4. Why shouldn't the IRS investigate a group that constantly whines about the injustice of taxation?

There's nothing in the world "inappropriate" about checking the tax returns of people who publicly advocate tax evasion and open rebellion against the government. They do everything but boast about how they won't pay taxes so they're either liars or tax cheats.

The IRS would be doing less than what we pay them to do if they failed to investigate these groups. They have nothing to apologize for IMO.

Unless this is yet another example of umpteen dimensional chess that's to complex for me to grasp.

Because outside of a random audit, the government should have some evidence of a crime other than "I don't like high taxes" before they start investigating and harassing citizens.  DUmbass.

The tea bags' whole schtick is that they hate paying taxes. IRS would be asleep at the wheel if they didn't keep an eye on them.

What the hell?

If it is as appears, it shouldn't be acceptable to anyone, under any circumstance.

I wonder how the DUmbasses would like ICE investigating them for advocating amnesty for illegal aliens. You never know when they might be hiding one out in their homes.

Or how abut the DEA looking into those who simply protest drug laws?

Tea party types SHOULD be having their tax returns scrutinized
If you have a group of people whose mantra is that they don't like paying taxes, and many of them advocate not paying taxes at all, then the IRS absolutely should be paying closer attention to them. After all, by not paying the taxes that they owe, these teabagging extremists are costing us millions - if not billions - of tax revenue.

Apparently some Jewish groups were harassed also.

No, it is never appropriate for your government to treat citizens or groups of citizens differently under the law because it either likes or does not like their beliefs.

Period. NO! The society this would create would be awful - and sooner or later, the focus would become groups you probably do support.

Unless this is yet another example of umpteen dimensional chess that's to complex for me to grasp.

So it would've been okay for the IRS to do this to anti war groups during the Bush administration who objected to paying taxes to "fund an illegal" war? Hell, Republicans even let you visibly & publicly & loudly protest during their convention when Bush was running for a second term. You're side, on the other hand, put you guys in cages called "free speech zones". They may have agreed with you but you were such a ****ing emabarrassment they didn't want anyone to see you.

And the message is exactly the same type. You little bitches can't argue you were justified and groups on the right aren't because both boil down to objecting to things the government is doing in our name. The difference? We wouldn't like it if it was happening to your groups either. Doesn't matter what side of the aisle a person or group is on, government intimidation boils down to evil brown shirt tactics. Too bad you guys are so blinded by hate and partisanship to defend your fellow citizens for doing the same things you do, just with a different point of view. Objecting to taxes is NOT a good enough reason to allow the government to do this kind of thing.

They're telling you all you need to know about their ideology. In their warped minds, we're not citizens; we're subjects. We're not supposed to question government (well, until a Republican is in office) and should just accept whatever taxes and regulations they place upon us with no protestations. In other words, our sole existence is to provide for the government. Serfdom. What illustrative number am I up to now in showing why it's so easy to prop up a dictatorship among the left?

Exactly, Rebel.  This whole situation is really, really showing their true colors, isn't it?

And they're so pathetically uninformed about it.  Plugabutt thinks it's individuals with certain beliefs being targeted for audit, which he cheers.  DUmmies, sit and ponder unintended consequences of that for a few minutes, if you can.

32. Frankly, ALL GOP organizations should be scrutinized, and rejected

Most conservative organizations advocate for policies that destroy the vast majority of people and the planet. It's a no-brainer.

They have lots of OP's on this (because of course, each one has to have their own special one); not a lot of replies, 1 or 0.

Well, to be fair, DU has been "talked to" by the Secret Service.  Guess that's the kind of shit that happens when your posters threaten the life of the President.

Yeah, if this was 2005 and it was revealed that the Bush administration was using the IRS to target Code Pink, Huffpo, Center for American Progress, the ACLU, etc., then the DUmmies would (rightly) be screaming for someone's head.

Lurkers... the misconception you have is that Tea Party members don't pay their taxes when in fact they do pay, they just feel that they pay to much. The Tea Party doesn't boast about or encourage tax evasion. The Tea Party want to use the legal and legislative systems to lower the tax rates for everyone... including you libs.

So far the Press is at least tolerating the "It was just one office in Cincinnati doing this" gambit, however I heard one of the IRS bureaucrats defending it (Possibly Lerner) and what she was actually saying as obliquely as possible was that this one office was where ALL such applications from across the entire country ended up before approval.  It wasn't just one 'Regional' office, it was the office that handled ALL of these applications from EVERYWHERE.
