LASIK consultation
« on: May 02, 2013, 08:02:52 PM »
I FINALLY scheduled a free LASIK consultation at a center that is always being advertised on the station that plays Rush & Hannity.  I've wanted to get LASIK for so long now.  My dad got it done around 2003 and hasn't had any problems.  My appointment is on May 30 at 2:45pm.  I'm nervous, but it's time.  I'm tired of wearing glasses.  I have prescription sunglasses because I really dislike those glasses that transition in the sun.  It's time for me to get new glasses/sunglasses, but figured going the LASIK route would be much better.

Have any of you had LASIK and what was your experience with it?  I'm nervous... lol

My wife has had the surgery and is happy with the result.

She says she is a little sensitive to light now, not abnormally though, just uses sun glasses outside.

I have to wear sunglasses too, or I start sneezing on sunny days.

I considered it, until I was told with my astigmatism I'd be looking at around $6K.

That was 7-8 years ago.  Now with needing bifocals (shut up!) I'm not even sure I'm a good candidate anymore even if I could afford it.

You might want to consider PRK if you have a active lifestyle. I got it done instead of LASIK. It's a little longer recovery time, but you aren't cutting into the cornea of the eye to make the corrections to the eye.

With LASIK, all that is holding that 'flap' in place is tension between water molecules and the layer of cells around the edge of the original cut. A man who had had LASIK done 20 years ago was holding his grandchild, the child brushed by his eye by mistake, and popped the flap off his eye.

It's been a year since I had  the PRK done, and my vision is now 20/10! I'm extremely satisfied with it!! :-)

Thanks for this info.  The place I am going to does that PRK thing.  So I'll get info for both of them.

Sparky, I have astigmatism and was told to wait until I was 30 before looking into LASIK in case my astigmatism went away or improved.  My eye sight feels like it has gotten worse, so it's time to see what it will cost me.

Also, with the sunglasses thing, I wear them daily.  It's too bright in Las Vegas not to.  lol

My Mom is blind due to Glaucoma, Cataracts, and now AMD.  Because of that, I never skimp on my eye care.  I have now been diagnosed with super dry eye and have had punctual plugs inserted.  Woot!

At any rate, my eye doctor told me he wouldn't recommend Lasik, but he would PRK.  Not for me, but in general.

I haven't heard of the PRK??  I thought that LASIK just changed the curvature of the eye by flatening it out a fraction.

Everybody needs to protect their eyes from the sun.  Wear the sunglasses and a hat.  You need to get the right vitamins too.  I was also told by my opthamologist to wash my eyelashes every night with baby shampoo.

I had PRK back in 2005. Had a week recovery time but the change was immediate. I'm still light sensitive and lights at night can have halos around them. Only problem is it reversed a bit and I wear glasses again to sharpen things up but it's not the end of the world if I leave them at home. I don't even have to use prescription sunglasses.

I had LASIK in 2004 from LASIK-Plus.  Cost for both eyes was around 3k with lifetime corrections.  I had astigmatism and severe myopia.  I do have some halos, but that was beginning before the LASIK anyway.  I've never, ever regretted having it done.  Getting rid of the horribly heavy glasses has been a blessing.

I just got home from my Lasik consultation.  Everything looks good and I am a good candidate for it.  I'm going to schedule my appointment for the end of July.  Since the surgery won't break the bank, I'm just going to get it done and over with.  I'm waiting until the end of July only because we have family coming in and out of town when the appointments in June are available.  So... yay!  :)

Well EC... not trying to rain on your parade here or anything... my boss had it done 6 or 7 years ago and had problems. Had to have it redone like 3 or 4 more times. I've wore glasses since I don't know when and I was thinking about doing it... changed my mind after he had it done. A couple other people at work had it done and they loved it. Dunno.  Good luck Sweetie!   :cheersmate:

The technology is so much better than it was back then.  I also get a three year assurance plan, so in that three years, any needed "touch ups" are free.  After that three years, it's $600-$800 per eye depending on what I want/need to do.  Either way, going this route is much cheaper then constantly buying glasses and prescription sunglasses every year.

I've been told that if I had it done, I would still need glasses--for astigmatism.  So I'm not bothering.

I've been thinking of doing the Lasik but only on one eye.  I don't know what this PRK is so I guess I'll look that up.

Right now I do monovision (I only wear one contact) and it works well for me.  I don't need reading glasses and probably never will plus my distance vision is 20/20 with the contact.  If I can get one eye done and get the same results I would do it in a second.

When did you look into Lasik last?  The technology has changed so much for us with astigmatisms.  Wearing glasses after Lasik isn't unheard of.  The consultant told me I may need to start wearing glasses for reading and night driving around the age of 40.

I can understand that EC. I've wore glasses so long that I feel naked without them. Hell I won't even do contacts. Dunno Sweetie. Me? The way my luck goes something would screw up and I'd be blinded for life.   :argh: :argh:

Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.   :cheersmate: :cheersmate:
