I'm curious how one gets an $8,000 tax refund.  I've never gotten more than a couple hundred dollars.

The mandatory withholding on a lump-sum payment, such as a bonus, would account for that (Among several other possibilities), particularly one that was late in the year and not cranked into the requested W4 withholding rate on regular wages.

You know why the DUmmies hate this couple.....because it highlights their utter failure to manage their own affairs....both sexual and monetary.

I think they were newlyweds and the wife was only making $1500 a mo.  Maybe the husband still had a single/0 or even a minus dependent amount withholding on his W4.   

I worked with a girl who did single/0 plus an additional $25 a week for Federal withholding just so she would get a large refund.   

 

I do that Dori. Only because every now and again some of my investments give a big return and I don't like getting a big tax bill. Back in the late 90's I got hit with a penalty because I had 3 years of back to back to back huge returns and the damned fed gummint tossed a penalty on me for not witholding enough. I went round and round with them... but it didn't matter. They said I should have anticipated it.   

So now I make sure I got enough taken out. If I don't get a big return that year, no big deal. I just invest the refund.

I can understand the logic though. Some people, my dad was one of them, get a dollar or two and spend it as soon as it hits their wallet. Forced savings.  For some people it is easier to do that than try to save up money for whatever.
