Mom Demands School Go Peanut-Free For Allergic Child

The parents of a 10-year-old boy with a very serious peanut allergy are suing Livonia Public Schools.

Kathy Williams said her son, Nick, could die if exposed to peanuts.

She told WWJ Newsradio 950′s Marie Osborne that the district has failed to protect him.

“We had asked them to go peanut and tree nut-free, and their response to us was, due to the upset in the community and the backlash from other parents, we refuse to change practices,” Williams said.

...

“‘Why should we have to do this for one child?’ ‘I don’t really care if your child dies; my child’s getting the cupcake.’ ‘Why don’t you keep him at home? He doesn’t deserve to be here,’” Williams said.

True that peanut allergies can be fatal. I know that one person I went to jr. high with died on vacation after graduating high school because of eating food with peanuts.

And wow, Livonia-area parents really say that kind of stuff like "I don’t really care if your child dies" or "He doesn't deserve to be here"? Seriously? Livonia is in Michigan's 11th cong. district, whose representative is a Republican and represents the 19th state house district also represented by a Republican. (Thaddeus McCotter, a Republican candidate for the 2012 presidential election who resigned over the forged petitions scandal, used to represent the US House district that included Livonia.) I wouldn't be surprised that suburban right wing parents living in the suburban outskirts of a major city would show snotty elitist me-first attitudes, but those quotes...geez it sounds like Ms. Williams may be exaggerating for dramatic effect.

Safety should come first, and while I appreciate Kathy Williams's efforts in defending her kid, this is the thing I wonder about people with peanut allergies. How can they avoid contact with peanuts in the workplace or other outside places? Is there a treatment? I hope Nick Williams avoids going to Detroit Tigers games, as you know how the song goes, "Take me out to the ball game...buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks."

Mind you, liberals are the ones who transform, "Pay for your own damned birth control." into "The RW will take away your birth control and force you to be pregnant for their war machine."

Or "The state shouldn't recognize gay marriage." becomes "They murdered Matthew Shepherd with their words!"

Sadly, for this Proglodyte, no one really bit on the intent of the thread; they jibber-jabbered about the practicality of peanut prohibition.

Would be easier if the other parents demand the whiner keep her sick son out of the school.
Problem solved.

This one child's right (need) to live in a nut-free environment outweighs the right of hundreds of other kids to live their normal lives full of peanut butter sandwiches and Snickers bars.

Makes perfect sense.   :hammer:

Nah.  The needs or desires of the one are far more important than the welfare of the many.

That's illegal, isn't it?

Liberal thinking is a two-legged stool and magical thinking is one of the legs, the other is a combination of self-loating and misanthropy.  To understand it, you would have to be able to sit on that stool while juggling two elephants, an anvil and a fragmentation grenade, sans pin.

I agree. I guess they all got a PBJ for lunch and died before starting school.

All my life, until the past twenty years or so, I never once heard of this affliction.

I know somewhere there's someone who is deathly allergic to anything you can name, but come on!

Now every school has a bunch of kids who can die from peanuts? How did this trait evolve so suddenly?

Where have all these kids been hidden for the entire history of mankind until the past twenty years or so?

It's a side effect of flouridation. It saps the precious bodily fluids, and creates peanut allergies.

Uh, why doesn't she just teach her child to not eat peanuts and products containing peanuts. Then, she could be a RESPONSIBLE parent and care enough about her child to make his lunch everyday. There are plenty of yummy options that kids love. Take her kid to the store with her and let him choose some things for himself. Sheesh!

It took me about 5 seconds to learn that almond butter is safe for people with peanut allergies. DUmmy mom could make ABJ sammiches for her kid, almond butter cookies, rice krispie treats with almond butter and chocolate swirl frosting, etc. If she can't cook, she can make almond butter bananas.

Peanuts are not nuts, they are legumes so banning tree nuts would do nothing other than deprive others. It is amazing how greedy and self centered these people are. Also, if kids were not being fed at school with our tax dollars and were bringing their lunch like I did this would be a non issue.

I wonder if the increase in claimed food allergies isn't due to the population but the food itself.

I have never had any food allergies that I know of until recently.  Thinking back, it may have always been there, but I've always been able to eat spicy peppers without any adverse effects.  I seem to be allergic to capsaicin, the ingredient in hot, spicy peppers.  I remember my hands breaking out in rashes after touching the pre-packaged "catfish" batter we used at work when I lived in NC and worked as a cook.  Now, it's cayenne pepper or any kind of dried chili powder that makes me itch from head to toe after eating it.  The lunch I bought from the Greek gyro place today tossed some dried seasoning on my food.  I felt horrible after eating it and my scalp and ankles are still itching.

I ordered the same thing from that restaurant and bought falafel instead of fries last time... no problems.

The worst problem I have is itching and maybe a mild rash.  I can't say I have any other experience with food allergies.  Yes, I get the same problem from my own cooking when I use cayenne pepper in my chicken rub.  I've been eating that often enough to expect it.

There are antihistamine that can stop the allergic reaction.

There are. But in the pursuit of "zero tolerance" and in response to the plethora of ambulance-chasing attorneys and insurance companies who would like to not be driven into the poor house by them, schools refuse to give a kid so much as a single Tylenol. If you want your kid to have a Benedryl when s/h/it encounters something they're allergic to, you have to leave work, go get the meds for your little bunny wunny, in some districts, take the kids off campus, so as to relieve the school of any liability which might result from treating your cherub, give 'em the meds, return them to class, and then go and try to pick up your day where you left off. Having done it for my boy recently, and having the luxury of living only 3 miles from my office, it's a minimum 45 minute ordeal.

One would have to take it every single day.  Your choices are a drugged-out kid or the same child with an adverse reaction to said food itching and scratching all day.

I actually like almond butter better than peanut butter. I make my own...very easy...stick almonds in a food processor...process until it's "butter".

If my child had an allergy that would kill him/her, there is NO WAY I'd trust the public school to keep my kid safe.  I would definitely find a way to home school, or a private school option.  If, on the other hand, I were a whiny-butt lib, I'd sue the entire county to keep the area completely safe for "Mommy's Little Darling."   :mental:
