Thinking about moving back home to Mass & have a question about excise tax

I moved out of Massachusetts in 2001 to attend grad school in Colorado. Had no intention of ever moving back but now that my first grandchild has been born in Springfield, I am seriously reconsidering.

Here's my question, though: I think I left an excise bill unpaid. I didn't register my car in Colorado until 2004 (when I made the decision to stay here after grad school). How long do those taxes and charges remain on the record? How long do they seek collections? I imagine I could potentially owe thousands of dollars and that thought alone might keep me from returning home.

Anyone have any idea or experience with this?

Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

It's not looking good for the deadbeat primitive.

Three responses so far, and apparently the commonwealth is pretty tough about this.

Professional student, was probably still in college in his forties, so as to defer paying back student loans.

I was thinking it was someone that had a child at 15 who is now having a child at 15.

The former Massachusetts resident should know that the commonwealth loves taxes, fees and fines. Massachusetts - where the Registry of Motor Vehicles no longer issue drivers a courtesy 'your licence is about to expire' notice, because it is far more profitable to wait for the citizen to screw up and end up with a much bigger fine.

I guess paying taxes is only "patriotic" when it is convenient for the DUmbasses. :hammer:

Kinda like "dissent" only being patriotic when Republicans are in charge.

Reminds me of that scene in "Gone With The Wind" when mammie says, "Taint fit'n, taint fit'n, just tain't fit'n".

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

A totally lame bouncy tale.

We are to believe a DUmpmonkey moonbat living in Colorado, one of the most beautiful places in the world, wants to move back to Massachusetts, one of the most congested, most highly taxed and corrupt places on earth, jammed to the gills with Massholes.

No way. Not even a DUmmy is that stupid.

Just one step over the line and into a new world, NH.  Just as beautiful, no State tax---small towns, 60 minutes by car from the beach to the White Mountains, One can here on the coast drive about 25 miles south starting in Maine through NH and into Mass.

That reminds me of a notice I received.  In effect:  "Outstanding News!!!!  We are now going to allow you to pay these property taxes in three installments, instead of all at once!!!  Aren't we great?  20% APR.
