I have a Tracfone that cost $19.99 and I can get on Facebook with it, send texts, make calls, take pictures/videos and it's and mp3 player.  I still mostly use it as a phone and sometimes an mp3 player.

If it can't make julian fries with it ,it's not a smartphone,LOL.

I have Straight talk, which is made by the same company. I might go back to tracphone as the cards are cheaper...

Besides a smart owner, it needs an OS and the ability to connect online like a PC.

This is why I'm confused about my phone, the sales person said my phone is NOT a smart phone but I CAN connect to the internet.

My phone is the same way.  I can connect to the internet to download stuff for the phone (ringtones, updates), but that's it.  It doesn't have a browser or a touchscreen... it's just a phone.

I have one, a Razor... but sadly, I am not smart enough - or patient enough - to learn all that it can do.

As long as it will do what I need it to do...that's all I care about. And my bill is cheaper than when I had a Treo.

I looked into getting a non contract phone, but I couldn't get any guarantee that I could call BFE, Utah.    I ended up staying with Verizon on a 2 yr contract.

My husband gets so much abuse about his phone at poker games, firehall meetings etc.  Both of ours are 15 years old.  They place and receive calls.  Costs $20/month for some minutes.  Meanwhile, his hip-yet-destitute son has all this gadgetry (purchased by his doting mother).  I don't know how he pays the bill.
