Obama Says NRA ‘Willfully Lied’ To Beat Background Check Bill


 
President Barack Obama held an emotional press conference in the Rose Garden this afternoon reacting to the failure of legislation to expand background checks on gun sales in the Senate. After being introduced by the father of a child killed at last year's shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, Obama attributed the defeat of the bipartisan background check compromise to "untruths" about the bill spread by the National Rifle Association.

"The current leader of the NRA used to support these background checks. So while this compromise didn't contain everything I wanted or everything that these families wanted, it did represent progress. It represented moderation and common sense," Obama said. "That's why 90 percent of the American people supported it. But instead of supporting this compromise, the gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill."

Obama said the NRA exagerrated the effect of the bill, which scared gun owners and mobilized them to oppose the legislation.

"They claimed that it would create some sort of big brother gun registry even though the bill did the opposite," said Obama of the NRA. "This legislation in fact outlawed any registry, plain and simple, right there in the text. But that didn't matter. And, unfortunately, this pattern of spreading untruths about this legislation served a purpose. Because those lies upset an intense minority of gun owners and that in turn intimidated a lot of senators."

I swear I have never seen a president that whines as much as 0bama does.
 
Call me cynical, but the fact that they are claiming that this bill will outlaw a registry makes me think that just the opposite will happen. They have a track record of what they say about their legislation being the opposite of what it really is.

Herin the President admits that this is only part of an overall erosion of our rights as "progress" only represents movement towards an ultimate goal not the goal itself.

I doubt they 'willfully lied' - the NRA probably said something to the effect of : 'you vote for this piece of crap, its unlikely that we will be filling your coffers with campaign contributions, and might enrich your opponent instead' - I suspect that statement and sentiment is entirely true. -Just like any other Washington lobby.

The NRA correctly characterized the the background check amendment as infringing on the rights of private citizens to engage in direct person-to-person sales without government permission- when Emperor Barry the Sun King had been dancing around that for two weeks. They caught him out on his lie.

You would be correct. The amendment to the bill said that the AG was prohibited from making a registry but nothing about other departments. By specifically naming the AG it is implicit consent that other agencies could...and would.

Exactly. Adam Lanska's mum had a full artillery, knowing her son was mentally disrurbed. No amount of gun laws woud have stopped him, or Leoghner or any other person bent on criminal mischief

He killed her to get to them.  Outside of mandating every gun owner secure their weapons under lock and key, no amount of new laws would have prevented it.

That is what I think Obama really wants....he is being very subtle and sneaky about it!. He is putting into plans to push the socialists agenda. If he takes away the 2nd, what is to stop him from taking away any others?
