Senate Torpedoes Background Check Deal

By Meredith Shiner
Roll Call Staff
April 17, 2013

The Senate on Wednesday failed to advance a bipartisan background check proposal that Democrats had hoped would be the core of any bill.

The background check legislation, championed by Democrat Joe Manchin III of West Virginia and Republican Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania, received only 54 votes, six short of the 60 needed to clear a threatened filibuster. In the 24 hours leading up to the vote, President Barack Obama and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., along with her husband, Mark Kelly, had personally lobbied on-the-fence senators or those who had declared themselves as “no” votes. But those efforts failed.

Hours before the vote, most of the backers of the Manchin-Toomey bill were openly resigned to the fact that it would fail. The only person who seemed to hold out some hope that senators would have eleventh-hour conversions was White House Press Secretary Jay Carney...

Though the background check provision garnered the most attention, other gun violence measures, such as the assault weapons ban or limit on high-capacity magazines, are also expected to see defeat Wednesday.

The DUmmies are praying the bomber is a conservative white guy, otherwise this day has hit the shitter.
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

This morning (or maybe it was last night) Reid was announcing the time for the vote today and called it the anti-gun vote.

John McLame!!!  I bet he did the same thing to his fellow prisoners in Nam! Sell out!
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

I love the fact that Slow Joe went to preside over the senate for this vote.  I don't know if he thought he might cast the deciding vote or if he thought his presence would influence some people.

Also, Obama reacted like a petulant child being told he couldn't have his way.

Only four Republican senators committed to voting for the amendment ahead of time. The last was Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who announced his support Wednesday afternoon. The other three were Toomey, Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.

I sent Toomey an email, I may have to vote third party again.  :whatever:

He showed more anger about his bill not getting passed than he did concerning Benghazi and Boston. You KNEW Bush was pissed after 9/11.
When Harry Truman was President of the United States, he had a sign on his desk in the White House that said: "The buck stops here." If Barack Obama had a sign on his desk, it would say: "The buck stops with Bush." - Thomas Sowell
