Schools that paint their locker rooms pink as a way to humiliate their opponents are sending a sexist message – and are setting themselves up for a lawsuit, two lawyers said in Iowa today.

“It’s harmful because the message to the male athletes is that it is bad to be associated with any female traits,” said Lisa Stratton, a co-founder of Gender Justice, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

The pink locker rooms are about shame, implying that a football team’s opponents are girlish, dainty and weak, said Jill Gaulding, the other co-founder of the Minnesota-based group.

Iowa fans might consider it a good-humored tactic to psyche out the other guys, but the message can lead to discrimination, the two activists said during a workshop at the Iowa Governors Conference on LGBTQ Youth.

“Iowans didn’t invent the notion that being a girl is bad, they’re just riffing on it,” Gaulding said. “They’re just making it visible.”

The pink color scheme at the University of Iowa’s locker room dates to the 1980s, and was expanded in 2005 to make it more pink. Football coach Hayden Fry has described it as a strategy to make the opposing team feel more “passive” and “psyche them out.” Fry linked the color pink to “girls’ bedrooms” and “sissies.”

I told my wife she couldn't wear pink any more because it discriminatory towards visiting athletes. It made her cry.

Does this mean women now have a monopoly on the color pink?

Would it be insulting for a visiting women's sprts team to have a locker room painted blue?

What does it mean when women try to join predominantly make prefessions, i.e. military combat arms?

When Code: Pink dresses like giant pink vaginas are they engaged in the sexist displays (apart from ruining vaginas for the rest of us)?
