WANT TO SEE WHAT CSCOPE AND COMMON CORE (EVEN HOMESCHOOLING) LESSONS LOOK LIKE? THESE PARENTS OPENED UP TO THEBLAZE
Apr. 2, 2013 10:10am Tiffany Gabbay

As a greater level of scrutiny is being placed on the controversial curriculum systems CSCOPE (in Texas) and Common Core Standards (nationwide), concerned parents spoke to TheBlaze about their troubling experiences, revealing that not even home-schooling is beyond the reach of these encroaching systems.

Home-schooling not beyond the reach of Common Core?

Keven Card, a former Marine from Houston who has home-schooled his children for the last six years, thought his family was safe from the reach of Common Core, but soon learned otherwise. As noted on his blog, two years ago Pearson Education, which is linked to Common Core, acquired Texas Connections Academy, the online charter school Card uses to homeschool his ninth-grader.

One lesson plan featured a video dubbed, ”China Rises,” that appears to tout the virtues of Communism over capitalism.

“It blew my mind,” Card told TheBlaze in an interview.

“They make kids watch a video that makes capitalism look bad and Communist China look good. It’s absolutely unbelievable.”

Arne Duncan: ‘White suburban moms’ upset that Common Core shows their kids aren’t ‘brilliant’

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told a group of state schools superintendents Friday that he found it “fascinating” that some of the opposition to the Common Core State Standards has come from “white suburban moms who — all of a sudden — their child isn’t as brilliant as they thought they were, and their school isn’t quite as good as they thought they were.”

It's pretty sick. I'm learning about Common Core in my "Intro to Christian Education" class. Just complete idiocy from the government.

Anything I found that was contemporaneous was full of BS and propaganda.  I mostly used my ancient books from college to homeschool my children.  For history books, I had to go way back.  It was a daunting struggle at first, until I realized I just need to go back to a better time before the libs had rewritten history.

When are parents going to stand up?

They are standing up.  Standing up in line to get the new Playstation 4 while they trust the government to give their youngins a "good" education.

In order for the adult high school I work for to maintain their accreditation, we have to comply with common core beginning next year. Here is my problem with the math portion (the only part I really am well acquainted with): there is no book for any of the three math classes they require. There is a mash-up of Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry in each class! The classes are now Math 1, Math 2, and Math 3, with no explanation of what we should do with students who started under the old program and now have to switch to the new program. I now have to spend some serious time over the spring semester creating new lesson plans that meet these new standards and have 3 books for each student. It is a mess!

I see the constant "Re-imagining" of education as being one of the reasons that US education does so poorly when compared to other countries.  Basic arithmetic hasn't changed significantly in centuries, so why do we feel the need to change the way we teach it every couple of years?  I took math through college Calculus, and I did fairly well at it, but my grandmother still has me beat when it comes to doing quick, basic arithmetic, and her high school education was focused on preparing her to become a secretary.  She can add things up in her head like a human calculator.

My father and myself can do that....but my son can't, why? Because they don't teach/test math/arithmetic like they used to.....it's to dumb down the smart ones and raise the stupid ones so school test scores look better on paper....and they allow them to use calculators in grammar school....no exercise for the mind or body in schools any more.

If you didn't know, I'm an old man with a young son. He graduated from the same high school I did 50 years ago to the day. He got to the ninth grade with excellent grades in math.....and when he had trouble with algebra I discovered algebra wasn't the problem, it was simple arithmetic....he didn't know simple multiplication/division tables.

I get mad and my blood pressure shoots way up every time this subject comes up. He was an Honors Graduate, top 10% of his class but it would not have happened if I hadn't spent 3 months teaching him what the public school system had failed to teach him in 9 years. He's in college now taking calculus and doing just fine so far.

I see too much homework these days. It gripes me that kids still in grade school sit in class 7 hrs day being taught to tests and then get another 2 hours of mind numbing homework.

Maybe some kids can do this, but I've experienced active little boys really turning off to school.

What I hate the most about common core is that it's illegal. We have Federal laws that does not allow the federal government to mandate how kids get taught.  This was the brainchild of government bureaucrats who have never even taught school.  I see it as another Trojan horse that once it's implemented, there will be more and more liberalism injected into the kids psyche.

What we're seeing here is the exact opposite. The high school has gone to "block teaching" a dumb idea of 90 minute classes, with only 4 classes per semester. The teachers are still teaching roughly 20 minutes per period and the rest is for classwork and homework. If it weren't for me staying right on top of my boys, I would never know what they are doing in school.

My sons school did that....it don't freaking work.

Not having seen common core Math, I am most probably off base in this reply.  Without delving too deeply, I am Math oriented.  If one wouldn't have to work with commies on a daily basis, I've always thought being a Math teacher would be my dream job.

When teaching my children Math, I started them out with the Saxon Math course of study.  It sounds much like what you are referring to… combining Algebra and Geometry together as opposed to separate courses.  It seemed to make it all easier for my children to understand to see how it all fits together plus adding real world problems for them to solve.  I remember thinking at the time that the other children I went to school with might would have benefited from such a course of instruction.  Especially those that were not interested in Math.

To me, ANYONE can do well in Math.  It comes down to interest and practice.  I was lucky in that I had a father that loved Math and Science who constantly presented common problems to me to solve.  He successfully passed down his love of Math to me as I did to my children.  The Saxon Math curriculum was a good start for them.  I am hoping Common Core is an attempt to do similar.  Unfortunately, if it is similar, being government-run they will find a way to screw it up.

Simple math problem to entertain yourself and friends.....for laughs.

write down the following numbers in this order.

1,000

+10

1,000

+20

1,000

+30

1,000

+40

Now fold paper from the bottom up exposing only one number at a time and ask friends to add them up and call out answer as you go. I've also seen it done covering the numbers from the top down at the same time you expose the next number from the bottom.

The correct answer is 4,100 but 9 times out of 10 they will give the answer as 5,000.

Should work 99 times out of 100 on DUmmies.

Basically, yes. Unfortunately, they have already screwed it up. Instead of allowing us to look for programs such as Saxon that already combine the programs, we have to work from approved books which are still separated into the traditional courses. They MAY have a new book in a year or so.

I, too, believe anyone can do well in math. I have students come to me having failed the same class more than once and pass my class. Not because I make my class easy, but because I have time to teach it in a way they can understand. Some days it is quite a challenge, but so satisfying to see them being successful.

Good for you!  All teachers should follow your lead.

As for the separate books, I don't envy you there.  You'll need to be creative, and from what I've been told, creativity is frowned upon these days in the classroom.  I wish you luck and the greatest success.

Thank you Purple Sage! It is really rewarding and luckily, I have great support from the people above me. Because it is an alternative (adult) high school, creativity is highly encouraged. As much fun as I am having with the math program, our social studies teacher would pull his hair out if he had any left.
