While I'm no fan of the USPS so far as their management ability goes, I must admit that it is one of the best postal systems in the world. For the price, as compared to other countries, they have been providing a bargain. I can count on one hand how many times that have screwed up my mail and I'm almost 50 years old.
I say this because, we have experience with one of the worst postal systems in the world. My wife and her family have had to mail things to and from Iran. In that country, theft is a perk for postal employees. You can't mail anything that even has the slightest appearance of value or it will never make it. It will show up opened and taped shut with anything of interest to the postal employee missing. Many times, either direction, it can take several months for a letter to be delivered.
International US postage stamps are $1.05. Return postage from most countries is 2 or 3 times that. I know this because I exchange QSL cards with ham operators all over the world to confirm radio contacts. However, electronic methods are starting to catch on.
Having said all of this, if the USPS cannot manage themselves properly in the present competitive environment, they deserve to fail.
