So what can we do? One thing is to join or start a local cooperative.

We can affect the economy. Buy less and buy local. Move your money to local banks or Credit Unions that invest in local business. Support farmer's markets and local coops. Coops can make a difference.

1. I really, really, really like the cooperative idea and I think I could organize one as I have run businesses before in a capacity as a manager, but I wouldn't know where to start. I would have to be more consultant than owner/worker because I'm in my seventies and wouldn't be able to pull my weight, but I could set up an office the bookkeeping and all. But where do you get the seed money and how do you get people involved to become owner/operators? I don't think a bank would be interested in lending money for such an enterprise.
 
Where I live, which is both a tourist destination for the beach and ocean attractions, as well as a wine country and agricultural area, doesn't have a base for retail businesses because they have been swallowed up by the big box stores.
 
Our real needs are to help our poor, but this wouldn't really make a paying business.
 
Maybe buying and running one of the many hotels here could be profitable, but I don't know anything about the hospitality business.

Okay, now at first I figured the benzadrineboy primitive was trying to pull a fast one.  In his suicide thread, he mentioned he was from around Sacramento, California.  And here it seems he's alleging to be from around New Orleans, Louisiana. 

Upon closer inspection, it appears he knows some people in Sacramento who've been down to New Orleans for a few days or something.

The more people who form these and take business from the corporations, the better because then more people will want to be involved with and work for cooperatives.

6. I think we need to change our mind-sets. Most of us were raised to think material items were important. Boat, two cars, big house, etc. And as long as the economy kept growing that was fine. But it was really just a bubble. A big bubble and now it's broken and we need to reevaluate what's important to us. Really important.

I'm all for a DUmmie coop. Except for we would have to feed and clean up after them and they would produce nothing of value. So, on second thought, I'm all against a DUmmie coop.

Both of my aunts joined various communes through the sixties, all up and down the west coast.  I never talked to them about it, but they would tell other people their stories.  I would later ask questions of those people, to find out what it was like.  

At the communes they were on, it seems most people were always good at something, and yet sadly, it was always nothing that was actually useful to the community as a whole.  The women were also expected to do almost everything in every commune they visited.

The enormous, worthless, diabetic DUmmy Bennyboy is on his sixth day of a suicide fast, but wants to start some kind of co-op in an undefined business.

Maybe he could start a bathroom tiling co-op.

Sounds like a winner.

When I hear "co-op", unless it's a group of farmers, I just hear "winos".

Can you imagine what a coop run by DUmmies would be like?
It would be like OWS on steroids.

My neighbor did the commune thing.  Long story short, for various specifics they always fail, but the common thread is simply hypocrisy and lack of incentive.  And......

Therein lies your problem, everyone over there who would be interested in it wants to be a 'consultant'. Not enough people are going to want to do the grunt work in that crowd since all would claim some disability or another that prevents them from contributing in any meaningful way other then being a consumer of said labors.

When the pilgrims tried it, it didn't work for those same reasons.   Too many not pulling their weight.
