homeless shelter - 5:45pm weekday curfew

story about homeless in sf. The family featured in story find housing through a homeless shelter. 5:45pm curfew? Holy crap. I helped out at a homeless shelter a few years ago - curfew was 10pm and many people had a hard time making that. 5:45pm would seem like a prison check in time.

Thomas Bailey is from Detroit but has lived in San Francisco off and on for 25 years. He and his daughter moved to New Orleans last spring to be near her mother's family. Her mother isn't in the picture. Bailey doesn't talk about her in front of his daughter, but surreptitiously wrote "on drugs" on a slip of paper to explain the absence.
 
Bailey said he longed to return to San Francisco and got a job offer from a catering company in January, but when the pair moved back, the job fell through. Because Bailey didn't want to pull Ashanti out of school again, they've been staying on a mattress in a friend's house in the Bayview.
 
"I've never had a problem with housing before - until I came out here," he said.
 
Bailey scrambled to find somewhere to live and connected with Compass Connecting Point, which tries to help families find housing quickly. Still, it took more than two months.
 
"They said, 'Keep on calling, keep on calling,' " Bailey said. "I had to call every day."
 
On Monday, it was move-in day at Raphael House, a residential program in the Tenderloin that provides families with a single room for a maximum of six months. The Baileys were easier to place than larger families and agreed to the program's strict structure, including 5:45 p.m. curfews on weekdays.

1. Yeah, good luck getting a job that will allow you to meet that one.

Since it is a family shelter, it makes sense to have an earlier curfew, say 8 PM, to make sure the kiddies get tucked into bed.
 
Having a ridiculously early curfew ensures that the parents won't be able to work and will stay in the shelter forever.

I'm surprised nobody has tried blaming this on Fundies yet  (The Raphael House is an Orthodox Christian charitable organization.)  I've known several people who have worked and volunteered there.

Families work directly with case workers to address individual barriers to homelessness in order to develop a long term plan for success.

Families who enter Raphael House agree to:

Abstain from using drugs or alcohol.
Attend and participate in goal oriented activities such as financial education classes, meetings with case managers, and child development workshops.
Comply fully with income reporting and savings requirements (80% of income to savings).
Enroll children in school or daycare and establish an after school plan.
Complete education orientation and schedule times for mandatory classes in child development, housing search, career planning, budgeting, and consumer credit repair.

True.  Most of the ones I see in L.A. are either crazy and/or on drugs/alcohol. 

I was just talking to a friend who works at a large county hospital and she said that most of the ones they see are mentally ill.  We need more mental institutions.

That's the difference between us and them. We want poor folks to be helped then it's up to them to get out of poverty even if it takes some help. The DUmmies just want them to be handed everything for free. Not because they care for the poor, but they want those freebies too.

My sister... who is an ER nurse... says they call them "Frequent flyers". Either they are nuts or wanting meds. She said it gets pretty busy around the end the month.

I did ask her one time about the folks coming in for colds, etc. She said that doesn't happen much unless it is a young mother and her kid is sick. Another dummie myth shot to hell.
